The Louisiana Political Science Association elected as its vice-president John Sutherlin, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Sutherlin was chosen during the annual LPSA meeting held jointly this year with the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. The LPSA represents all of the various political science departments across the state. Sutherlin, who served the organization for six years as secretary-treasurer, will be responsible for organizing next year's conference. This is the first time the LPSA has ever chosen ULM as host for the annual event.

"The new facilities with multi-media conference rooms make ULM ideal,” Sutherlin said. “Also, since I have organized conferences and workshops before, the LPSA was comfortable in electing me as vice-president."

Sutherlin noted that last year he was able to take three undergraduate students to present their papers and hopes that because the conference will be in Monroe, more political science majors will attend and present.

Jay Hicks, assistant professor and head of ULM’s radiologic technology department, will attend “RT in DC” in Washington D.C. March 18-21 as a representative of the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technology.

The American Society of Radiologic Technology is sponsoring this advocacy campaign to promote and support the Consistency, Accuracy, Responsibility, and Excellence in Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Act of 2007 (H.R. 583) during the 110th Congressional session.

Hicks will be meeting with and educating many of the state representatives and senators about the bill, which is designed to establish educational and credentialing standards for personnel who plan and deliver radiation therapy treatments and for those who perform all types of medical imaging examinations.

He asserts that it will also help reduce the risk of medical errors associated with misdiagnosis or the misadministration or radiation.

Pix of Richard ChardkoffHistory professor's forgotten story to be published

About 15,000 young men underwent pre-flight and advanced bomber navigator training at Selman Field in Monroe, the only all-inclusive navigator training facility during WWII. ULM history professor Richard B. Chardkoff is telling their story in his new book "The Navigators."

Chardkoff recently learned that Center for Louisiana Studies has accepted his manuscript for publication.

"It's a story of one of the forgotten airfields of World War II," he said.

"They were just 18-year-old kids who won every imaginable award, including the Congressional Medal of Honor."

Telling important stories is not new to Chardkoff, who wrote "Sol's Story: A Triumph of the Human Spirit." In his book, Chardkoff tells the story of Monroe businessman Sol Rosenberg and his experiences as a Holocaust survivor.

Chardkoff, director of the general studies program, completed his undergraduate work at Vanderbilt University and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Florida State University.

He is the author of numerous articles, which have appeared in historical publications, presented papers at professional conferences, and is the recipient of several research grants including a Fulbright Fellowship to Argentina and a ULM research grant to Poland.

Cliff Tresner, associate professor of art at the University of Louisiana Monroe, is one of 20 artists selected to display outdoor sculpture in the city of Lakeland, Fla.

Tresner’s work was chosen during a recent national juried competition curated by the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland. Tresner created a large carbon steel figure titled “Tower of Babel” that will be displayed along with nine other artists along the Lemon Street Promenade, a three-block area through downtown Lakeland. Awards from the installed works will be selected March 18.

Three artists selected for the Seventh Annual Florida Outdoor Competition have or will display their work at ULM’s Sculpture Garden, located on Mitchell Street at the entrance to Spyker Theater.

Doug Makemson from Georgia is currently exhibiting works titled “Herons Courting” and “Heron Ignoring,” a fabricated stainless steel abstraction of oversized herons.

Scheduled for installation this season are Ohio artist Shawn Morin and Florida artist Michael Contell. Morin will display “Armor,” a stone and steel work, while Cotrell will display a large fabricated steel and bronze work titled “Sliver.”

ULM is attracting many fine artists from around the nation for display of outdoor work on its campus and for the city of Monroe’s enjoyment. The ULM Sculpture Garden is free and open to the public.
