ULM sorority celebrates founding anniversary
The Lambda Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus celebrated its 35th anniversary in October by planting an oak tree in Scott Plaza. The tree represents the chapter’s original 11 members who founded the chapter in October 1974.

Members of the Lambda Rho Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at the University of Louisiana at Monroe beautify the campus by planting an oak tree in Scott Plaza. The tree represents the chapter’s original 11 members who founded the chapter in October 1974. |
Part of the Pan-Hellenic Council, Delta Sigma Theta has been involved in local community projects since its founding. With participation in events such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the American Heart Walk, Sickle Cell Walk, Great American Clean-Up and the Muscular Dystrophy Association Ride n’ Stride, members continually demonstrate commitment to the community.
Delta representatives say that the tree is just one more way to “give back” to the ULM campus and community. “The oak tree will not only beautify our campus,” Elise Gardner, the group’s parliamentarian, said. “It will also honor the Lambda Rho Chapter and its legacy.”

ULM 2010 PREP Staff announced
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Office of Recruitment and Admissions recently announced the selection of its 2010 Preview Registration and Enrollment Program (PREP) staff, selected from students who have excelled in leadership, academic achievement and enthusiasm for ULM.
PREP is a two-day orientation program held each week in June, to introduce the academic, social and cultural aspects of ULM and to promote a sense of dedication and pride among incoming students.
Under the guidance of PREP staff, new students adjust to college life by acquainting them with the requirements and expectations of the university and with student services and campus resources. Staffers also guide students through academic planning and registration and help provide an opportunity for students to interact with faculty, staff and other students that can help them as they transition into college life.
During the PREP program, parents of incoming students have the opportunity to attend the Parent Orientation Program. Two ULM students are selected each year to serve on POP Staff to assist parents as their student transitions to life at ULM.
The PREP Staff will not only have the opportunity to lead the PREP sessions but will also attend the Southern Regional Orientation Workshop in March at the University of Louisville with other universities from across the South.

ULM’s 16 Greek chapters will compete in a Christmas song and dance competition, featuring an overall first, second and third place, calculated by the highest score totals. The first place winner will perform at the Christmas at ULM event on Dec. 2 in the Quad.
“We chose the Salvation Army Angel tree program is because Songfest is Christmas themed,” Keith Hembree, Greek Life coordinator said. “With the recent economy and job situation, we felt that this would be a great way to show the Monroe Community how Greek Life supports our area children.”
The Angel Tree program provides local underprivileged children with clothing and/or toys for Christmas.
