Honorary Art Fraternity awards scholarship to ULM students

Two University of Louisiana at Monroe students, Ebony Nicole Johnson and Srdjan Marjanovic, received prestigious scholarships from Kappa PI International Honorary Art Fraternity through their local chapter, Delta Alpha.

Johnson joined the fraternity last fall, and became active in the organization as secretary. She was notified of a second place award after entering an international competition to be recognized in the fraternity’s publication, The Sketchbook.

ULM student Srdjan Marjanovic, who received an honorable mention, admits he always loved to draw, but never thought of art as a viable career choice. He came to the U.S. from Serbia, but was born in Santiago, Chile.

Marjanovic brings 10 years of professional basketball experience with him. "Ebony and Srdjan set great examples for their peers through hard work, perseverance and a dedicated work ethic. The Division of Art faculty are very proud of them and their accomplishments,” said ULM Associate Professor of Art Cliff Tresner.

The local business has generously supported ULM through the years, including a major contribution for ULM’s Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center. This marks the first time the baseball team worked the event with Pi Kappa Alpha.

“I think it is great that two ULM groups, one representing Greek Life/ Student Life and one representing ULM Athletics would spend an entire day for a company that supports our university in the way that CenturyLink does,” said Tommy Walpole, associate director of alumni relations and Pi Kappa Alpha advisor.

ULM students are “Hometown Hawks”

University of Louisiana at Monroe student organization the Hometown Hawks recently announced its selection of members.

Hometown Hawks is a volunteer-based service organization for ULM students where the students themselves act as recruiters at their former high schools. Though there are no regular meetings, Hometown Hawks members are required to return to their hometown high school to speak to students about ULM.

The Office of Recruitment and Admissions also tailgates at local high school football games in September and Hometown Hawk members are also required to attend at those twice.

“ULM students can sometimes connect better with high school students than our own recruiters,” Brooke Taylor, event planner at ULM and advisor for the Hometown Hawks, said.

“They can tell them about their own experiences here and all the great changes taking place.”

Students must have at least a 2.3 GPA and submit an essay to be accepted into the organization.

Sixty-two ULM students from around Louisiana and surrounding states comprise the Hometown Hawks for the 2009-2010 school year.

“I have found that the Hometown Hawks love getting the opportunity to return to their high school and share their experience here at ULM,” Taylor said. “This organization is a unique way that we have found to promote ULM.”
