Departmental Facilities

The Department of Biology has facilities in three campus buildings. Garrett Hall and the third floor of the Chemistry and Natural Sciences Building contain classrooms, student and faculty laboratories, and faculty offices. The Museum of Natural History and Herbarium NLU reside in Sandel Hall, and the department utilizes a greenhouse adjacent to Garrett Hall.

Within these facilities the department has available a variety of research equipment for its students and faculty. Some of these items, organized by subdiscipline, include:

Microscopy: dissecting, compound, epiflourescence and phase-contrast microscopes with imaging capabilities.

Physiology: computer-interfaced physiology AD converters; extracellular physiology recording apparatus; microspectrophotometer; spectral reflectometer; portable photosynthesis system.

Aquatic and Field Biology: various traps, nets, and samplers; water chemistry probes, meters and samplers; 15' aluminum boat with outboard motor; wet lab with aquaria, artificial stream, and aeration system; sound recorders; GPS units; depth finder; spotting scopes and binoculars.

Molecular and Cell Biology: 1 megaohm and Nanopure water filtration; Bio-Rad and Kodak EDAS gel documentation systems; thermal cyclers with gradient functionality; spectrophotometers; free-standing and benchtop centrifuges; vertical and horizontal electrophoresis rigs; ABI 3100-Avant DNA analyzer.

Computing: five computer-enhanced teaching laboratories; scanners; digital cameras; slide maker.
