Student Organizations

Students majoring in or with interests in biology are invited to participate in the three student organizations that meet regularly on campus.

BETA BETA BETA, Nu Gamma chapter

Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Since its founding in 1922, more than 175,000 persons have been accepted into lifetime membership, and more than 430 chapters have been established throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

TriBeta was founded in 1922 at Oklahoma City University--the Alpha Chapter--by Dr. Frank G. Brooks and a group of his students. The idea of an honor and professional society for biology students spread rapidly and by 1925, the society was a national organization. Biennial national conventions of student and faculty members began in that year and in 1930 the society journal, BIOS, began publication of student research, articles of interest to biologists and society news. As the society grew, it was divided into regional and district groups, each of which holds a convention annually. At the heart of every district and national meeting are student research papers presented in the style of graduate meetings. Awards are given for outstanding individual and chapter accomplishment.

For more infortmation on TriBeta, contact Dr. Chris Gissendanner.

ALPHA ESPSILON DELTA (AED)
AED is a national premedical honor society devoted to providing guidance and encouragement to students preparing for careers in the medical professions. All premedical and other students interested in health-related fields are invited to join. To become more informed about different health fields, we invite guests including doctors, nurses, veterinarians, dentists, and others to speak at our meetings. We also plan trips to medical schools and are active in community service.

For more information on AED, please contact Dr. Allison Wiedemeier or Dr. Debra Jackson.

ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE (AWIS)
AWIS is dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. The ULM student chapter is affiliated with the larger northeast Louisiana chapter. Its mission is to encourage networking and mentoring relationships among faculty, non-faculty science professionals, upper-level science students, and younger students as a means of helping women scientists of all ages realize their potential. Any student interested in supporting careers for women in the sciences (not just science majors and not just female students) is invited to join AWIS.

For more information on AWIS, please contact Dr. Anna Hill.
