Few things in the course of a college education are as gratifying as being able to to do scientific research under the direction of a faculty member. One feature that sets ULM's Department of Biology apart from other institutions is the various ways students can get involved in research. The two main ways students get involved in research are explained below.
Emerging Scholars Program
The Emerging Scholars program joins students and professors in cooperative research and other professional activities. Students selected for the program receive a stipend of $400 per semester to participate as "junior colleagues" in the extra-class professional activities of professors. Students must be either second-semester freshmen or first-semester sophomores to be eligble. Students interested in pursuing the Emerging Scholars program with Biology faculty should contact either Dr. John Carr or Dr. Thomas Sasek. Additional information, including flyers, can be found on the Emerging Scholars webpage.
Howard Hughes Biological Sciences Education Program
The Howard Hughes Biological Sciences Education Program at ULM provides students a way to do research with a faculty mentor while earning credit and a stipend. Winning one of our undergraduate research awards affords you the opportunity to engage in meaningful scientific research with one of the ULM biology, chemistry, or geosciences faculty members. Recipients earn a cash stipend of $1000 per semester (for up to two semesters), up to $500 in supply money for their project, and a chance to compete for a summer research award. Students also earn course credit through independent research courses in their department. More information on the Hughes program can be found on their webpage, or by contacting either Ms. Sami Owens or Dr. Ann Findley .
Other opportunities arise for students to participate in research with individual faculty members of grant-funded projects or on a volunteer basis. Many faculty announce these opportunities in their classes, and we invite you to contact faculty you may be interested in working with. Contact information can be found on the departmental faculty page. |
