ULM Graduating Senior or Graduate:
Because you are one of ULM’s outstanding graduates, you have been chosen to participate in a networking event so that you can visit with selected local employers.
A networking event like the one we’re sponsoring is a wonderful opportunity for you to meet and greet potential employers. It’s also a good time to mingle with University faculty and administrators who may be able to introduce you to even more employers with whom they have connections. You’ll find that both employers and faculty are happy to help you with ideas and advice that will put you in a good position to advance your career.
A little advice:
Make a good first impression! Be dressed neatly and professionally (most of the employers will be coming straight from work, and you’ll want to fit in). Be ready to approach our guests with your hand outstretched, ready to shake hands and introduce yourself. Don’t wait to be asked for facts like your major and your graduation date—tell them! And then, when they respond with their own introduction, really listen. Look them in the eye, smile, nod—be friendly and truly interested. Leave your cell phones in the car!
Finally, this is a different sort of event from a career fair. This is primarily social. So chat with everyone, but don’t be overly aggressive in your “job search” mode. Don’t bring your resume, but if you’re asked, be ready to offer to email it to them. If you have business cards (a good idea), feel free to offer them. Mention that you’ll be at the career fair on February 16, and ask what advice they might offer as you start your career. Remember your best manners. This is a time to eat and drink lightly (it’s a snack, not a meal), chat, and socialize. And don’t forget to thank the employers and faculty for attending.
