Introduction

As the population of the United States grows more and more culturally diverse, teachers are challenged to address the critical needs of students from many backgrounds. In addition, schools are required to address issues to help improve the educational experience for all students including making the curriculum more culturally relevant and responsive.  This module, Respecting Cultural Diversity is intended to provide useful information for teachers in today’s culturally rich classroom environment.

In Part I of the module you will begin by examining your dispositions about teaching and your belief systems about different cultures. You will also explore the definitions of the terms, bias, prejudice, and differences between race and ethnicity.

In Part II, strategies for effective communication and overcoming language barriers will be presented.  You will also examine the roles that language, both foreign and slang, play in creating or destroying a learner friendly environment.
