Dr. AlfordDr. Ken Alford, Department Head for Kinesiology published
"The Journal Impact Factor: Does it Devalue Applied Research in Physical Education, Recreation and Dance?"  JOPERD 83 vol 5, May-June 2012 52-55
The article examines the Thomson Reuters Scientific Citation Indices (so-called "impact factor--IF") and their impact on research.  The impact factor rating system has become a defacto "ranking" tool for determining the relative worth or strength of academic journals.  There are numerous inconsistantcies and factors that fail to be included in the impact factor, yet it is still held by many academic leaders as the critical factor for determining the worth of research activities.  Studies that find their way into publication in journals with high IF are considered more "important" research than those in journals with lower IF.  As such, the IF has begun to greatly influence the direct and types of research done.
