DEPARTMENT
VAPA, Department of Art

The Department of Art is part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, including also Music, Theatre and Dance, which is part of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department has well equipped studios for drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography and graphic design. The Department also has two updated computer labs, studio space for advanced students, a visiting artist sculpture garden and an art gallery.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe, a state-supported institution with over 8,000 students, is situated on a 208-acre campus along the banks of Bayou DeSiard. The University combines the beauty of the bayou and a tree-shaded campus with modern, well-equipped academic and athletic facilities and residence halls. ULM presents a varied schedule of music, art, dance and theatre events. The cultural, academic, recreational and social opportunities make ULM an excellent place to work.

THE COMMUNITY: The Monroe-West Monroe metropolitan area is home to around 100,000 people. Monroe is located in northeast Louisiana and is readily accessible by air and major highways; it lies about halfway between both Memphis and New Orleans as well as Shreveport and Vicksburg. Housing is also quite reasonable, with many nice subdivisions located within a fifteen minute commute to the University. The area’s medical, shopping, outdoor recreational and cultural opportunities -- including the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Twin-City Ballet, Little Theatre and Masur Museum of Art -- make the community an attractive area in which to live and work.

Currently efforts are being made to revitalize the Monroe Downtown area with several art galleries located in Art Alley and surrounding locations. ULM offers a Masters of Education and Master of Arts in Teaching degree, both with a concentration in Music. The Department occupies Biedenharn Hall, a spacious, well-equipped facility that was completely renovated in 2004, and the Band Building with an 8,000 square foot rehearsal hall. Biedenharn Hall features a 280-seat recital hall equipped with two nine-foot Fazioli concert grand pianos.

THE UNIVERSITY: The University of Louisiana at Monroe, a state-supported institution with approximately 9,000 students, is situated on a 238-acre tree-shaded campus along the banks of Bayou DeSiard. ULM is an SREB Four-Year institution and a Carnegie Master’s College and University I. The University combines the beauty of the bayou and a tree-shaded campus with modern, well-equipped academic and athletic facilities and residence halls. ULM presents a varied schedule of music, art, dance and theatre events throughout the year. The cultural, academic, recreational, and social opportunities make ULM an excellent place to work.

THE COMMUNITY: The Monroe-West Monroe metropolitan area, with a population of approximately 100,000, is located in northeast Louisiana halfway between Shreveport and Vicksburg, MS, and is readily accessible by air and major highways. Mostly moderate temperatures and low personal and state income taxes contribute to a comparatively low cost of living. Housing is also quite reasonable, with many nice subdivisions located within a fifteen minute commute to the University. The area’s medical, shopping, outdoor recreational and cultural opportunities, including The Monroe Symphony and Symphony Chorus, Strauss Community Theatre, Biedenharn Museum and Masur Museum, offer activities year-round.

Currently efforts are being made to revitalize the Monroe Downtown area with several art galleries located in Art Alley and surrounding locations. The Downtown River Market operates in the Fall and Spring on the Ouachita River. Nonprofit organizations such as Downtown Monroe and the Downtown Arts Alliance sponsor events such as ArtFest, and bi-monthly gallery crawls on the first Thursday of the month.

The Ouachita River, Bayou DeSiard, and many nearby lakes offer opportunities for fishing, boating, skiing, swimming, and a variety of outdoor activities.
