Educational Leadership and Counseling

Educational Leadership

The nationally recognized Educational Leadership program leads to the Master of Education in Educational Leadership degree. Louisiana requires school administrators to be state-certified. The master's degree program at University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) is the only program in the northeast area of the state that enables students to meet certification requirements through completion of course work.

Educational Leadership students are required to complete the core courses, and additionally, the courses that constitute the specialty areas for Elementary Principalship, Secondary School Principalship, Supervision or Superintendent of Schools. The four programs are consistent and compatible in that each emphasizes conceptual and technical skill development, applied research, and supervised practice.

Instructional Technology Leadership

The Instructional Technology Leadership program, designed for those who aspire to be technology coordinators at the school, district, regional, or state levels, is nationally recognized by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Candidates may follow the either of two possible tracks:
  • One is for for preparing technology leaders in PK-12 at the school, district, regional, or state levels, or for those who simply want a good background in technology as they teach in PK-12.
  • The other track is for anyone working in a non-PK-12 technology based training/instructional design setting.

In September of 2001, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved certification in Educational Educational Technology Leadership. The ULM masters program prepares candidates for this certification. In addition, graduates of the IT Leadership program also earn Teacher Leader designation.

Application packets are available in the departmental office located in Strauss 306. A degree plan worksheet and a list of courses and when they are scheduled to be taught is available in the Instructional Leadership and Counseling office on the second floor of Strauss Hall. Because most of our students are working full-time, the Instructional Technology classes are offered at night (5:00-7:45 p.m.) or on-line.

Counseling

All applicants for the M.Ed. degree in School Counseling program are expected to meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School listed above and the requirements of the specific program to which they are applying. These program requirements consist of application forms, supporting information and letters of reference. The specific minimum GPAs and GRE scores are listed in the Graduate Catalog.

The Substance Abuse Counseling Program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe utilizes the most recent research and techniques in addictions treatment. This is coupled with the traditional understanding offered by Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12-step programs. This combination offers graduates the tools to best counsel clients dealing with addictive issues. Mental health counseling with addicted populations requires expertise, knowledge, and techniques not normally included in general counseling texts. Graduates of our program are well equipped to offer effective counseling dealing with the specific types of resistance, denial, and other cognitive processes found in the addicted client. Group therapy is the treatment of choice in treatment centers and our program prepares students to be effective group leaders
