Checklist for English Coursework, Pre-2009 Catalog          


English majors must complete a total of 42 hours of English from the following list
AND 42 hours General Core Coursework .

English majors must take 15 hours of first-year and sophomore-level courses:

1001 Freshman Composition I
1002 Freshman Composition II
2001 English Literature I
2002 English Literature II
2005 or 2006 American Literature I and II

24 of the 42 hours must be at the upper level, of which at least 18 hours should be at the 400-level.

Upper-level courses also should satisfy the following requirements:

Students must take at least one of the 2 Junior Seminars:

English 3050 (Prose) OR English 3051 (Poetry/Drama)

At least one 4000-level class should have a significant theoretical or interdisciplinary content. This course may be chosen from among the following three courses:

4025 Literary Criticism
4082 Linguistics
4083 History of the English Language

At least one class —which can also fulfill a period requirement—should be a “major author” class. This class may be chosen from among the following four courses:

40036 Chaucer
40037 Shakespeare’s Tragedies
40038 Shakespeare’s Comedies and Histories
40039 Milton

*Note: This course also may be used to fulfill one of the Pre-1700 period requirements.

Students should complete at least two 4000-level classes from the following three categories:

(1) Two 4000-level courses prior to 1700:

Such courses as 3009 (Louisiana Life and Literature), 3010 (Science Fiction), 3011 (The Short Story), 3012 (Contemporary American Fiction), 3015 (Creative Writing), 3050 (Junior Seminar—Prose), 3051 (Junior Seminar—Poetry/Drama), 0393 (Mythology of the Greeks and Romans), 3094 (Classical Tragedy and Comedy), and Directed Studies (English 4050,4051) may also be used to fulfill period requirements when they are part of an otherwise balanced curriculum.
