Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the 2009-10 academic year! I am honored and proud to be serving as your Faculty Senate President for this year.
Your Faculty Senate made significant strides last year in the betterment of the academy. A partial listing of our actions and outcomes included a regular series of faculty chats with Provost Richters (some attended by President Cofer, also), being very proactive and at times quite forceful in working in dealing with the Administration over budget cuts for this year, developing a resolution opposing weapons on campus, to mention a few.
This year, we are actively involved with the six (6) ad hoc committees that will help respond to the Tucker Commission findings, working with state-wide Faculty Senates in addressing the apparent major differences between the TRSL and ORP plans, as well as helping to set the future direction of the University.

Purpose of the Faculty Senate (adopted 5/1/04)
"The faculty has primary responsibility for such fundamental areas as curriculum, subject matter, and methods of instruction; research; faculty status and working conditions; and those aspects of student life that relate to the educational process." (AAUP, 1966 Statement on Government of Colleges and Universities.)
The University of Louisiana at Monroe Faculty Senate shall serve as the agency for faculty participation in the government of the University. Accordingly, the Faculty Senate represents and supports the entire faculty. The Faculty Senate shall advise the administration regarding the selection of academic officers, the policies and procedures governing salary determination, and other matters concerning the general welfare of the University, either on its own initiative or upon referral of proposals from others.
Senators are elected by the faculty to represent their colleges and the faculty
as a whole, in conformance with the Faculty Senate Constitution and By-laws.
