Ms. Susan Jennings is the holder of the Mary Ellen Walker Professorship in Early Childhood Education.
She is an instructor of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Development.
Jennings received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy from Sam Houston State University, a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Houston, Clear Lake, and is currently working on her dissertation for her Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in Reading and Language Arts.
Jennings served as a graduate teaching assistant during her time at Texas A&M, instructing reading assessment courses, reading courses, and courses focused on literacy for culturally diverse learners.
Jennings has also spent time working in the Texas K-12 system as both a teacher and private tutor.
Along with her extensive teaching experience, Jennings has contributed to numerous publications, and given national, regional, and local presentations. Some of her work includes the Reading Psychology article titled “Science textbook’s use of graphical representation: A descriptive analysis of four sixth grade science texts,” co-authored by S. Slough, E. McTigue, and S. Kim.
As seen through her presentation experience, literacy and reading are the foundation of her educational and career aspirations. She has presented on the topics of reading and literacy throughout the nation at conferences and meetings in Dallas, Texas, Hartford Conn., Little Rock, Ark., and New Orleans.
Some of her presentations include, a “Survey of literacy teaching methods and frequency of use in regular and special education classrooms,” which was a paper presented at the 31st Annual meeting of the Southwest Educational Research Association and “Helping children with special needs achieve success in the special needs classroom,” a paper presentation at the annual meeting of the Texas Association for the Education of Young Children.
Jennings has been a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and Who’s Who among America’s Teachers.
She is a current member of Phi Delta Kappa International, the International Reading Association, and the Houston International Dyslexia Association.
