Master of Arts in Gerontology - Online Program

America 's older population is rapidly expanding, making gerontology one of the fastest growing fields today. Research in areas such as psychology, health care, social work, public policy and pharmaceuticals are vital to the growing elderly population. Those over age 65 are also most prone to chronic disabilities and have a greater need for support services. Of the elderly, those who are 85 years and older are most at risk of needing nursing home care.

Two of every five people will spend some time in a nursing facility. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that health services are one of the largest industries in the country, with more than 11 million jobs, including the self-employed.

  • About 13 percent of all wage and salary jobs created between 2000 and 2010 will be in health services.
  • Nine out of 20 occupations projected to grow the fastest are concentrated in health services.
  • Nursing facilities provide inpatient nursing, rehabilitation, and health-related personal care to those who need continuous healthcare, but do not require hospital services.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe Online Graduate Program in Gerontology allows working adults to acquire the education and training they need to keep pace with the rapidly changing world of gerontology. Students have the convenience of attending class from their own homes on their own schedules.
