ULM & LDCC enter into new online nursing articulation agreement
Louisiana's nursing shortage may lessen thanks to a new agreement between the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana Delta Community College.
The two institutions began working together in 2008 when they entered into an articulation memorandum of understanding, or "2+2."
On March 12 ULM President Nick J. Bruno and LDCC Chancellor Luke Robins entered into an expansion of the original agreement—to include an online nursing degree articulation.

DEQ presents $564,496 grant to ULM
Peggy Hatch, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, and Senator Mike Walsworth, chair of the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, presented a $564,496 DEQ grant to the University of Louisiana at Monroe Feb. 28 in Monroe.
Dr. Nick J. Bruno, president of ULM, and Dr. Kevin Baer, principal investigator and toxicology department chair, accepted the grant.
The grant is for two projects. The projects, focused on Bayou Lafourche and Turkey Creek in the Boeuf River Sub-Basin, entail ULM taking grab samples in-stream on a weekly basis for the duration of the two-year grant period.
ULM will provide DEQ with needed water quality data.
ULM's Annual Wine over Water scheduled for April 12
The ULM Alumni Association is again hosting its award-winning Wine over Water event from 7 – 10 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, on the bridge overlooking beautiful Bayou DeSiard.
The event is an excellent way to support the University of Louisiana at Monroe, raise funding for local scholarships and enjoy a memorable evening.
Proceeds go to "The Spirit of The Warhawk Scholarship."
Musical entertainment will be provided by New Orleans-based MoJEAUX.
A "Friends of the University" Patron Party will begin at 5:30 pm in the ULM Conference Center, located on the 7th Floor of the ULM Library. Tickets are $125 per person.
Wine over Water event tickets are $50 each. Attire is dressy casual.

Warhawk flag flies over Afghanistan
ULM alums Aircraft Commanders Lt. Col. Scott Ditto (B.S. '91) and Captain Johnathan P. Coon (MBA '09) flew the Warhawk flag on a C-17A from the 172 AW, Jackson, MS ANGB. The flag was flown during a medical evacuation mission to Bagram AB, Afghanistan Feb. 15-20, 2012.

ULM's Career Connections offer employment services
The Office of Career Connections & Experiential Education at ULM (formerly Career Services) has an online job posting service serving ULM students and alumni.
The Web site, www.ulm.edu/careerconnections allows employers to post part-time and full-time positions as well as internship opportunities.
Anyone may browse the jobs, however, an active Campus Wide Identification number (CWID) will be needed to apply online. Alumni that graduated more than five (5) years ago should call Career Connections at 318-342-5338 to apply for positions.
Log onto www.ulm.edu/careerconnections and click on "Students: Browse & Apply for Jobs & Internships".
Employers will also find on the Career Connections Web site the link "Employers Submit Job or Internship" in order to post any job openings or internship opportunities at their organization. The Web site currently has over 800 positions available.

Irwin Thompson (B.A. '84) spoke on Feb. 6 in ULM's Conference Center in celebration of Black History Month. Thompson, a Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist, is the assistant director of photography for the Dallas (Tex.) Morning News.
Thompson joined the Dallas Morning News as a photojournalist in April of 1990.
Before moving to Dallas, he was a staff photographer for the New Orleans (La.)Times-Picayune and The (Monroe, La.) News-Star.
Thompson has received numerous awards, including recognitions from The Texas Associated Press, the Louisiana Associated Press, the Texas Headliners, the Press Club of Dallas Katie Award, and the National Press Photographers Association.
Thompson's photographs have been published in Time Magazine, People Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Sports Illustrated, US News & World Report, National Geographic, Life Magazine, New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times.
In 2006, Thompson was among a team of eight Dallas Morning News photojournalists that won the coveted 2006 Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography for chronicling the gripping images of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Born in Lake Charles, Thompson grew up in nearby DeRidder.
Don Hudson (B.A. '83), executive director of the Decatur (Ala.) Daily spoke in ULM's Conference Center Feb. 9 as part of ULM's Black History celebration highlighting the successes of black alums.
Hudson, a Louisiana native, became executive director of the Alabama newspaper in 2010. Hudson has a bachelor's degree in radio/television management.
After graduating, Hudson worked as assistant sports information director of then Northeast Louisiana University before becoming a sports writer at The Daily Leader in Ruston.
After stops at several major newspapers, including The Journal Constitution in Atlanta and The Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel, Hudson began working at The (Jackson, Miss.) Clarion-Ledger in 2003, where he supervised day-to-day news operations.
Heath Forbes (B.S. '99), and a former ULM football player, is making strides in Nashville.
Heath recently signed a deal with Luna Chica Records International, and has booked tour dates performing with former New Orleans Saint Kyle Turley and David Allan Coe.
A Monroe native with deep roots, Forbes’ music is a purely Southern combination of country and rock laced with distinct blues influence.
“I’m super excited to have this team who, like me, thinks outside of the box and encourages me to continue to be myself. It’s a refreshing partnership, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Luna Chica,” says Forbes.

Many alums may remember Dr. Martha Madden as the Dean of Women at Northeast Louisiana University.
Last week, Dr. Madden joined Yasmin Anderson Smith, host of Marketing Matters, for an interview on Achieving Career Distinction.

After leaving NLU, Martha's career has included stints as Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ); Special Assistant to the US Department of Energy, Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management; and, the Dean of Students at Semester At Sea.
Mike Vining elected to Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame
Former ULM men’s basketball coach Mike Vining has been elected to the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Vining becomes the third ULM coach to be honored by the LABC, joining Lenny Fant (1984) and Benny Hollis (1988).
Vining is the winningest coach in school history with 401 career victories in 24 seasons at ULM (1981-2005).
The Warhawks won seven Southland Conference titles and made seven NCAA Tournament appearances under Vining’s tutelage. In addition, ULM had seven Southland Player of the Year honorees and 46 all-conference selections under Vining.
Vining will be inducted at the LABC’s 38th Annual Awards Banquet on May 5 in Baton Rouge.

NCAA approves waiver restoring ULM Basketball Postseason Eligibility
The National Collegiate Athletic Association has approved a waiver submitted by the University of Louisiana at Monroe to reinstate eligibility for participation in postseason competition of men’s basketball for the 2012-13 season, while the full allotment of scholarships has also been restored, the ULM athletic department announced.
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and their performance in the classroom," Director of Athletics Bobby Staub said.
“It's been a true team approach from President Nick Bruno and the President’s Athletics Task Force (PATF) down to our coaches, faculty, academic staff and, of course, our student-athletes. While we still have some strides to make, we are definitely headed in the right direction."
Hawk Talk continues at noon on Mondays as baseball coach Jeff Schexnaider joins Hawk Talk to discuss Warhawk baseball.
The hour-long show is hosted Nick White and comes live from ULM's Student Union Building (SUB), and is broadcast over ESPN 97.7 FM -Monroe.

HBO Star and ULM Alum Vicki Gilliam to speak March 22
University of Louisiana at Monroe alum Vicki Gilliam, (B.A. ’87, M.A. ’90) returns to ULM on the heels of her popular speech given during President Nick J. Bruno’s Investiture last fall.
As part of ULM’s celebration of Women’s History, Gilliam will regale students and the public on her career and numerous successes as a lawyer, advocate, and businesswoman.
“An Evening with Vicki Gilliam,” sponsored by the ULM Diversity Committee, begins at 7 p.m., on Thursday, March 22 in the ULM Conference Center, located on the 7th floor of the ULM Library.

ULM Concert Choir and Chamber Singers tour Louisiana
The ULM Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will be on tour in central and southeastern Louisiana performing in a variety of venues and in a number of styles, cumulating with a 7:30 pm concert in Monroe, Thursday, March 22, 2012 at First United Methodist Church.
In addition to recruiting for the university through choral performance, the entire voice faculty is accompanying the choir, as well as members of the piano faculty.

ULM Child Development Center raises $2,158 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
ULM's Child Development Center is proud to announce another successful community service project in the form of its recent Mardi Gras Trike-a-thon Parade – the youngest Warhawks raised funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital totaling $2,158.
Emily Williamson, the center director, stated that this was the second year that the CDC hosted the event for St. Jude's.
“During the week leading up to the trike-a-thon, teachers taught lessons on bicycle safety as they prepared their students for the event.
ULM Interfraternity Council recognized for outstanding accomplishments
The University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Interfraternity Council was honored at the Southeastern Interfraternity Conference Awards Banquet Feb. 25, with one of the most prestigious awards an IFC Council could achieve.
The organization received an Overall Fraternal Excellence Award for its excellence in all 11 categories of council management – an award ULM has earned for the past four years.
This recognition makes ULM the only university in Louisiana, for the fourth straight year, to receive recognition at the awards banquet.
ULM Greek Life was also one of several schools recognized by Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society. ULM was recognized for spring and fall 2011 semester honor rolls and its outstanding scholarship within the ULM Greek Community.
ULM’s Chi Beta Gamma honored as Organization of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Louisiana
Chi Beta Gamma, the professional organization for radiological technologist majors at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently received the Organization of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Louisiana.
The ULM organization was honored with the award Feb. 16 at the Annual Wellspring Luncheon because of the hard work and generosity demonstrated by Chi Beta Gamma during a Christmas toy drive held at the end of 2011.
“We are so thankful to have such outstanding young people as those of Chi Beta Gamma who are committed to community service and especially our children,” Brandon said. “The Christmas gifts they donated made such a huge difference in the lives of our families!
