Nick J. Bruno

Alumni and Friends:

During my visits with our employees, the matter of the state budget was a recurring theme. I am sure many of you have been following the latest legislative actions which have indicated some positive news for higher education.

To view a one-page summary of ULM's current financial challenges, please visit:

ULM cannot “lobby” our legislators but legislators need to hear your concerns.  Our elected officials need to hear the challenges ULM is facing as well as those facing all of higher education.  Legislators have recognized the continued commitment and dedication by our employees to educating Louisiana’s future workforce and leaders however, hearing your concerns would help.

Thanks to all of you for your continued support despite the difficult fiscal challenges we face.  I am confident that ULM will continue to move forward, meet these challenges, and build upon where we are today.

Dr. L. King Scott, (B.S. ’75) of West Monroe recently received the Louisiana Dental Association’s Distinguished Service Award. His award was recently presented during the 133rd House of Delegates of the LDA’s annual session at the Shreveport Convention Center.

Scott—a part time instructor of Head and Neck Anatomy in ULM’s Dental Hygiene Program—spoke candidly about his university experiences and attributed much of his success to the education he received at ULM.

“I received a fabulous education at ULM,” he said. “ULM prepared me well for professional school. I try to instill into my students the same attributes that were instilled in me at ULM; excellence, setting goals, and following through. To this day, I still recommend ULM to high school students because ULM is such a great university with a long history in health sciences.”

According to Annette B. Droddy, assistant executive director of the LDA, “The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the LDA and is given annually to individual members who exemplify the highest standards of professional conduct in dentistry and make extraordinary contributions in organized dentistry and their community.”

Dr. Kirt Touchstone (B.B.A. ’75), presented the award to King, a dentist in West Monroe. Touchstone is a 1975 ULM College of Business graduate who attended LSU Dental School with King.

The 1988-1989 team had a 17-12 record again finishing second in the Southland Conference.

Following graduation, Brent served as a graduate assistant coach at NLU for two years (1989-1991).

Photo of Kristy Curry

Kristy "Kim" (Sims) Curry (BS '88) will become the next women's head basketball coach at The University of Alabama.

"I am very excited to announce that Kristy Curry will be the next women's basketball coach at the University of Alabama," said UA Director of Athletics Bill Battle.

"When we began our search for a head coach, we sought a veteran head coach that had a proven record as a consistent winner. Coach Curry has produced an impressive record at Purdue and Texas Tech. We are thrilled that she has chosen to lead our program, and we are looking forward to welcoming Kristy, her husband Kelly, and their children, Kelsey and Kendall, to Tuscaloosa."

Curry, who just finished her seventh season as head coach at Texas Tech, led the Lady Raiders to a 21-11 record last season and a No. 7 seed in the 2013 NCAA Championship.

The tournament appearance was the second for her at Texas Tech and her ninth overall as a head coach. While in Lubbock, she compiled a record of 130-98 and had several all-Big 12 performers, including the 2010-11 Big 12 Sixth Man of the Year, Chynna Brown.

"I am honored and thrilled to be the next women's basketball coach at the University of Alabama," said Curry. "The Alabama program has tremendous potential and I am very excited to get the chance to lead the Crimson Tide back to national prominence. I want to thank the Alabama administration for the confidence they have shown in me, and for giving me this opportunity.

"We leave Texas Tech with heavy hearts. Kelly and I owe our deepest gratitude to so many people in the Red Raider family. We will always be grateful to the Texas Tech fans, the administration, the faculty and, most of all, our players."

Prior to her appointment at Texas Tech, Curry spent seven seasons at Purdue where she guided the Boilermakers to NCAA tournament appearances in each season, including the championship game in 2001.

She became the second coach in NCAA history to lead her squad to the championship game in her second season as a head coach. Curry's overall record in West Lafayette, which includes six 20-plus win seasons, is 179-51.

Curry began her coaching career in the high school ranks before moving onto Tulane, where she spent two seasons (1991-93). From there, she spent one year as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin (1993-94), two at Texas A&M (1994-96) and three at Louisiana Tech (1996-99) before accepting her first head coaching position at Purdue.

Curry, a native of Olla, La., also earned a master's degree in education at Stephen F. Austin in 1994. She and her husband, Kelly, have two daughters, Kelsey and Kendall.

Warhawks lead nation in most returning starters

When analysts begin discussing schools with the most returning starters among FBS football teams, they only need to know three letters — ULM.

When ULM lines up at Oklahoma to kickoff the 2013 season Aug. 31, the squad will feature 456 career starts among its offense, defense and special teams units.  ULM leads ACC member Georgia Tech by 30 starts and just two other teams feature 400 or more career starts (Texas, 405; Ole Miss, 400).

Two of ULM’s opponents are ranked in the top 25 for career starts.

Baylor ranks tied for 16th with 345 career starts, while Wake Forest sits 24th with 322.  Two departing Sun Belt schools are also ranked in the top 25 as Middle Tennessee is tied with Baylor for 16th and North Texas comes in at 25th (318).  Both Middle Tennessee and North Texas will leave the Sun Belt following this season as both move to Conference USA.

The Warhawks also welcome back the most 2012 player starts as ULM sits at the top of the charts with 252 returning starts.

ULM leads UNLV by two starts with Texas sitting third overall and just three spots behind the Warhawks.

Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Maroon & Gold Society Banquet

Senior Stephen Lukinovich and junior Lea Anna Cardwell claimed top academic honors as the ULM Athletic Department handed out its top academic awards at its annual Maroon & Gold Society Banquet April 29.

In all, 128 student-athletes were honored for posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher following the fall 2012 term.

Lukinvoich, who joined the Warhawk baseball team to start the 2011-12 academic year, was named the Top Male Scholar Athlete, while Lea Anna Cardwell, a three-year member of the women’s golf team, earned Top Female Scholar Athlete honors.

Sharon Sason, a distance runner for women’s track and field and cross country programs, earned the award for Most Improved GPA.

The women’s golf team, for the second consecutive season, earned the Highest Team GPA Award.  Meanwhile, the women’s soccer program was named the Warhawk Cup Champion.

The top GPA award earned by the women’s golf program was the second for the program in the last few weeks as the team also earned top GPA honors (among other women’s golf programs) in the Sun Belt Conference.

Men’s basketball was also honored during the spring term as the squad earned the top GPA award at last month’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

New Orleans named host site of future Sun Belt Basketball Championships

Sun Belt logo

The 2014 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships will be held at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans  the league office announced.  New Orleans will be the host site of the tournament through 2016.

“All of the characteristics that make New Orleans one of the greatest tourist destinations in the world will guarantee that the Sun Belt Conference’s student-athletes, fans, coaches and administrators will love coming to the Big Easy every March,” said Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation CEO Jay Cicero.

“New Orleans is a great destination for our basketball championships and the recent renovations to Lakefront Arena make it an excellent venue to showcase our league,” said Sun Belt Conference Commissioner Karl Benson.

“In addition to being a great geographical fit for our membership, New Orleans has an incredible track record of hosting great sporting events – including the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl which has had a Sun Belt participant since the inaugural game in 2001.  The city’s great restaurants, shopping, entertainment and accommodations, provide Sun Belt fans numerous things to do when away from the arena.”

Lakefront Arena has recently undergone renovations that include a new $3.5 million exterior metal facade and sloped roof panels, a $1.5 million state-of-the-art bitumen roof system, $2.5 million in new seating with 8,700 chairs total, $1.2 million in ramp renovations, new flooring throughout the second level concourse, new tiles and restroom fixtures throughout, arena lighting upgrades, a new sound system and the building of two new lounges.

“New Orleans is a great destination for Sun Belt fans, as those who have attended the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl can attest,” said Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor of Troy University and President of the Sun Belt Conference Executive Committee.

“It provides an excellent geographical fit for our league and is easily reachable for our fans. As we make this announcement, however, I would be remiss if I did not thank the City of Hot Springs for four and soon to be five memorable tournaments, starting in 2009.”

Dates for the 2014 tournament will be announced at a later time.
