Bruno (right) open the custom-made display case which houses the original, authenticated manuscript of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," penned in Julia Ward Howe's own handwriting during dedication ceremonies Sept. 20 in the ULM Library's special collection area.

An exquisite, custom-made display case accompanied by a state-of-the-art sound dome was unveiled to the public at the ULM Library's special collection area during a special ceremony held Sept. 20.

The special case and dome were installed recently to house an extraordinary gift given three years ago to the university by Linda Noe Laine of New York, a long-time ULM supporter.

In March 2008, Laine had donated an original, authenticated manuscript of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," penned in Julia Ward Howe's own handwriting.

Also donated with the manuscript was a rare, framed photograph of Howe. Now the manuscript has a new home and music to enjoy with it.

A special feature of the display is that it showcases the ULM Concert Choir and the ULM Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Deborah Chandler, as they perform the stirring rendition of the song that listeners hear as they enter the sound dome. A videotape of the singers accompanies the music.

ULM and CenturyLink join in “win-win” partnership

University of Louisiana at Monroe student interns Toya Daughtrey and Jade Parks spent weeks immersed in the operations of CenturyLink, the third largest telecommunications company in the nation, but neither felt she was just another number in the corporate supply chain.

“You really become part of the team,” said Daughtrey, 22, of Shreveport. “Our supervisors wanted us to experience something useful. We weren’t there just to get coffee.”

In fact, the interns engaged in a “super apprentice challenge” in which they were tasked with generating ideas on what they thought would make a great internship experience.

“At the end of the internship we met with the vice president,” said Daughtrey. “He asked our opinions. It seemed like he really cared and was committed to the idea that the internship impact us.”

Parks and her winning team also developed a video about a typical day in the life of an intern, which the company posted on their Facebook site.

“It’s not an experience you can get just anywhere,” said Parks. “A lot of people don’t realize CenturyLink has the largest corporate headquarters in Louisiana.”
