REQUIRED INSURANCE

Health insurance coverage is required for all International students. The insurance costs are automatically charged to your University of Louisiana at Monroe student fee bill every semester for F-1 student visa holders. A student may be exempted from the required insurance if proof of comparable coverage is presented to the Director of Student Life in the first week of the semester.

It is the responsibility of J-1 visa holders to purchase insurance for their J-2 dependents and for themselves. J-2 visa holders are required to have insurance even if they are not enrolled in a school or university.

It is strongly recommended that F-2 (F-1 dependent) visa holders also purchase health insurance coverage.

PASSPORTS and VISAS

If accepted by the University, you will be sent a letter of admission and a form I-20 with which you may obtain a student visa for entry into the United States. Before leaving your home country, you must obtain a passport from the government’s passport office and a visa from the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Before your interview, you should pay the SEVIS fee. This is so that you can take the SEVIS receipt and your letter with the I-20 form with you to the interview as the interviewer will need to see them.

If you are a student on a F-1 or J-1 visa who is being admitted as a transfer from another U.S. college or university, you should contact the International Student Advisor at the academic institution from which you are transferring to determine the correct Immigration and Naturalization Service transfer procedures.

To meet U.S. government regulations, all students on the F-1 or J-1 visa must be full-time students (enrolled in 12 hours for undergraduates; enrolled in 9 hours for graduate students). Students on the F-1 visa are not permitted to work off-campus. Therefore, students should not plan to finance their education by working at an off campus job. A student’s spouse on the F-2 visa is not permitted to work either.
