Application Submission Date Revised: March 15, 2006
Download Fund Application.pdf

Dear Students,

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita had a profound impact on many of you. The ULM family responded generously to help all those affected, and now we have one more way to help. The university has created a special scholarship for those affected by the hurricanes’ destruction.

These funds will be awarded based on need and apply to tuition expenses. The goal of this scholarship is to help those who have been hit hardest by the storms continue pursuing their education at ULM. Scholarships will be paid directly into student accounts before the end of this semester.

To apply, complete the application, which can be downloaded at www.ulm.edu/katrina and return it along with the required documentation to the Office of University Advancement, Room 605 in the Library. You may also mail applications to:

Office of University Advancement
700 University Avenue
Library Suite 605
Monroe, LA 71209

The application must be received by March 1, 2006.

If you have any questions or need additional information, contact 342-3600 or stop by Library 605.

Sincerely,

Deborah Cofer

Message from ULM President, James Cofer
Announcing Wintersession

October 6, 2005

To those students who have been displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and/or Rita and to their parents:

Words of comfort generally fail during times like this, but I hope that you will understand how concerned all of us at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) are for you and your family. The sights we have seen and the stories we have heard on the news, together with the conversations we have had with others affected by the hurricanes, have touched us deeply.

Many of you have had your higher education plans, or those of your children, disrupted and are searching for alternative ways to continue those plans. With Hurricane Katrina, we accepted students through September 12th, the end of our third week of classes. We directed our faculty to work with these students to help them catch up to the rest of the class, but we felt that it would be unfair to ask students admitted after that date to make up the amount of work they had missed. They are under enough stress as it is.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Rita occurred after we had completed five weeks of classes. Students are first at ULM, but we do not want to place them at a disadvantage. We believe, therefore, that the best route we can take to help these students is to offer classes during ULM's first-ever Wintersession.

Wintersession classes will be offered both on-campus and on-line, with a focus on general education courses. They will run December 12th through January 12th, and students will be allowed to register for up to 6 credit hours. No classes will be held during the period starting on December 23rd and ending on January 1st because the University will be closed for its winter break. Final examinations will occur on January 13th. The schedule of classes for Wintersession 2005 will be available on the ULM website on October 19th, with on-line registration starting November 2nd and ending December 7th. A full calendar of important dates will be available on the ULM website (http://www.ulm.edu) shortly.

If you prefer another option, you might consider the on-line courses offered during the Sloan Semester (http://www.sloansemester.org). Other alternatives can be investigated through the Louisiana Board of Regents on their website (http://www.regents.state.la.us) or by calling them at 866-415-2269.

All of us at ULM want to help you recover from these storms. Please let us know if we can do anything else to assist you.

Sincerely,

James E. Cofer, Sr.
President

Katrina Relief

How can we help?

ULM is committed to putting its students first. Now we are extending a hand to reach the many students who at this time need our help. This experience can be the most rewarding for us all as we allow each day to become another link to all of our successes.

We now have an office for all current and new displaced students. We want these students to be given the resources necessary to continue their education. We intend to provide as much assistance as we can offer. If you are a student in need of help or a person that wants to provide assistance please contact me, the Relief Center Coordinator, Deborah Cofer, at studentsfirst@ulm.edu or at (318) 342-7777.

It is very important for us to be able to get in touch with you as easily as possible. We are asking that all students use their email Tribe Account. This account will keep you informed about the services we offer and help you might need. You can find the instructions for the account on the Katrina website at www.ulm.edu/katrina .

We have established two funds to help students affected by Katrina: the Katrina Relief Fund to help any ULM student who resides from the areas or has enrolled at ULM as a result of being displaced by Katrina, and the College to College Aid Fund to provide long-term financial assistance.

The College to College Aid fund was designed for colleges across the country that have a relationship with ULM. If these colleges and universities want to help in a very direct way, they are able to give through this fund. The fund encourages donations from all Student Government Associations nationwide as well as from all student organization who wish to give a direct donation to ULM. 100 % of your generous gift will go directly to helping students.

To give online to either of these funds, please visit: http://www.ulm.edu/giving/
Or your gift may be mailed to either designated account to:
