Study Abroad with ULM
Each year the Foreign Language Department offers an opportunity for students
to study abroad in Mexico or Costa Rica and earn college credit. In even-numbered
years students can travel to Mexico and in odd-numbered years to Costa Rica.
A ULM faculty member accompanies the students, who spend two weeks in the
host country and reside with families while attending class at a local language
institute. In 1998, as program director for the NLU-Merida program, I accompanied
17 students to the Yucatan peninsula, where we experienced a culture rich
in the Mayan heritage. Dr. Frank Pezold from the Biology Department offered
students the opportunity to study the ecosystems of the Yucatan in addition
to their Spanish studies. We also visited archeological sites and beach
resorts, as you can see in the photos below. Dr. Ruth Smith will take students to Costa Rica in
June, 1999. Contact the Department of Foreign Languages for more information.
