The Department of Foreign Languages
Student Outcomes Assessment
The Department teaches Arabic, French, Japanese, Latin, and Spanish and
offers degrees in French and Spanish in both the College of Arts and
Sciences and the College of Education and Human Resources.
Courses in French and Spanish are offered from the elementary through
the graduate levels.
By the date of their graduation, the Department strives to develop the
abilities of students who major in French and Spanish so that they
demonstrate the following abilities:
Read, write, and comprehend the
spoken language at
the advanced level as defined by
the American Council
of Teachers of Foreign
Languages. The advanced stage
means that students should be
able to narrate in the pre-
sent, past, and future and get
into, through, and out of
a survival situation with a
complication.
Communicate verbally at the
intermediate high level as
defined by ACTFL.
Intermediate high indicates that
students should be able to
perform at the advanced level
sometimes but not
consistently.
Demonstrate knowledge of the
cultures of the peoples
who speak the languages that are
being studied.
Demonstrate the ability to read a
piece of literature and
analyze it by identifying the
plot, theme, characters,
structure, tone, and language of
the work.
In order to assess the students’ success in reaching these goals,
majors will be assessed on their four skills and their ability to
analyze and their knowledge of culture and civilization at the end of
205. In their final semester of study, they will again be
assessed through a battery of tests and a written analysis. The
assessment has no impact on grades or on graduation but assists the
Department to assure quality instruction and preparation of its
students.
