English Literature:
A Guide to the Learning Resources Available at the
University Library, University of Louisiana at Monroe


Introduction

The University of Louisiana at Monroe library has a large collection of information materials and learning resources to support the study of English literature by undergraduates, graduates, and faculty. The materials include the reference collection, the main book holdings, the serials collection, and the on-line databases and Web site. In addition, the library provides access to resources held at other facilities through the library’s Internet computer stations, and by the inter-library loan service.

This is an annotated list of selected works on English literature currently held in the University of Louisiana at Monroe Library. Items related to the study of poetry, short stories, novels, drama, and fairy tales are included in this subject guide. The citations on this list represent only a small portion of the available English literature materials held in the library. Library patrons may find useful information by consulting the library’s print and electronic collections.

Materials dealing with English literature can be obtained by searching the LOUIS ULM catalog or indexes. Some basic search sentences would be:

The Oxford English Dictionary is the standard dictionary of the English language. A print copy is located in

The series began in 1870 with the publishing of the first edition by Ebenezer Cobham Brewer. Provides entries for

phrases, fables, and fictional characters drawn from the Bible, mythology, the classics of English and European

literature, as well as the contemporary period. Contemporary references include “James Bond”, “Winnie-the-Pooh”,

Beverly Hills”, and the “Oval Office.”

A dictionary of those literary terms which are in regular use. Each term has a brief definition or description. A short

The companion series is intended for students and general readers. Each companion provides information on the

lengthy descriptions, while less important figures receive shorter treatment. Does not include every character in the

Entries are provided for over three hundred contemporary dramatists writing in English. For each entry there is a

biographical outline, list of publications, and a short essay on the dramatist’s career and works. Individuals who

have been covered in the previous four editions are not detailed in the book. Instead a brief citation is provided

which directs the user to the appropriate edition for the dramatist concerned. The library has the previous four

editions located in reference.
