About Music...
The Department of Music, part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts, is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music. ULM offers the Bachelor of Music degree with concentrations in performance, theory and composition, music theatre, piano pedagogy, vocal music education, and instrumental music education. The School of Visual and Performing Arts also offers a minor in Dance.

What you can do with this degree:
The Bachelor of Music in composition and theory prepares a student for a career composing music for television, movies, musicals, opera, or commercial jingles. The degree also prepares a student for graduate study in the area., The Bachelor of Music in performance prepares at student for a career performing in professional orchestras, touring ensembles, musicals, professional opera companies, or acceptance into a military performing ensemble. The degree can also serve as preparation for a graduate degree in music performance.

What careers have our graduates pursued?

Get involved beyond the classroom:
Delta Omicron a national professional music fraternity, Phil Mu Alpha a national music fraternity, Music Educators National Conference student chapter, Kappa Kappa Psi national band fraternity, Tau Beta Sigma national band sorority, American Choral Directors Association

Student resources include
Music Computer lab, Music Technology laboratory, Smart Practice room, Music Resource Center that houses thousands of recordings of symphonies, band works, concertos, sonatas, choral works, and most every genre of music performance

Where are our faculty's interests?
Dr. Deborah Chandler and Dr. Jason Rinehart are hosts of music shows on KEDM, 90.3, Public Radio, hosted on the ULM campus. Mr. Louis Nabors is on the Board of Directors of the Houston Ebony Opera Association. Dr. Derle R. Long is involved in ongoing research in the area of music coincidence theory. Dr. Richard Seiler and Dr. Sandra Lunte have become regular collaborators with composers Libby Larsen and Eric Ewazen, Mr. Dan Sumner is developing a private guitar studio at ULM. The Black Bayou Faculty Brass Trio has toured Thailand. Many ULM music faculty perform regularly with the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, Longview (Texas) Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport (La.) Symphony, South Arkansas Symphony, Rapides (La.) Symphony, and the Jackson (Miss.) Symphony Orchestra.
