Counseling

We offer students a transformative experience that changes them both professionally and personally. You cannot help but be affected when you go through such an experience, so be ready for the challenge to evolve and move forward.

Our counseling faculty all possess diverse clinical and research interests that consist of trauma work, family and couples, play therapy, and school counseling. We offer an array of learning experiences that range from experiential activities to traditional lecture. We teach each class unique to its content and understand the importance of synthesizing the scientist-practitioner model with the humanistic model that makes sense for good clinical practice. Some of our courses will be more introspective and self-searching, while others are more focused on clinical content. We know that offering both types of experiences will train you to become a competent clinical mental health and/or school counselor.

Our curriculum comes from many years of planning and cooperation between the faculty, and our fall cohort model will provide you with a wisely chosen course sequence that will allow courses to build upon each other and be meaningful. Our class sizes are small, and we keep them small to provide students with direct access to the faculty.

What sets us apart?

100% online

Both our Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling Programs are completely online. There is no residency required. We use Moodle as our learning management system in our courses and Zoom as a way to conduct synchronous learning activities and construct pre-recorded lectures.

CACREP Accredited

Both our Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling Programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.

Cost Effective

We charge $500 per credit hour, and since our program is online there is no out-of-state tuition. The Counseling Program at ULM was ranked 10th in the nation for most affordable master’s in counseling programs in 2019 by Best Colleges Online.

New Fall Cohort Model

We offer a fall cohort model that sequences coursework in a way that makes the content relevant and meaningful to the students. Foundational content is given the first year, followed by advanced clinical content and internship experiences the second year. Students may go full or part time.

New Electives and Focus Areas

The Counseling Program is partnering with other online programs at ULM to offer students a variety of electives that will tailor to their clinical interest. Students may take online course electives in the fields of psychology, gerontology, and marriage and family studies to expand their interdisciplinary knowledge and create a focus area in pediatrics, geriatrics, addictions, or marriage and family studies.

Small Class Sizes

Faculty are committed to providing students with a quality education. Many of our content courses are capped at 15.
