Marriage & Family Therapy Programs

MFT

Masters of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy

  • ULM is one of few universities in the U.S. dually accredited by COAMFTE and CACREP to offer a M.A. MFT degree.

Mission:
The ULM Marriage and Family Therapy Master of Arts program is committed to a systemic orientation that fosters relational and contextual educational approaches in the fields of marriage and family therapy and counseling.  Our mission is to prepare clinicians whose competencies in systemic practice, clinical scholarship, and ethics will professionally serve a diverse society.  With a commitment to the classic foundations of family therapy and advancing the professions, we turn learning into relevant action for tomorrow’s practitioners.

Program Description:
The master degree program is an intensive, sixty credit hour program requiring two years of full-time study. Graduates of the program meet academic requirements for licensure as a professional counselor and as a marriage and family therapist in Louisiana as well as Clinical Membership of AAMFT.  The program is dedicated to educating highly qualified master's level clinicians and scholars.
An accessible and dedicated faculty, who are active in research and publishing, and a low student-faculty ratio fosters interactive educational experiences approaching a collegial, mentor relationship. Another important aspect of the program is that up to 18 full-time students per class will develop close relationships in their academic and clinical work together.
To a large degree, the requirements for licensure and accreditation in the dually accredited program dictate specific curriculum requirements, however, each class takes on its own character as current theory and research are presented in different forms reflecting the styles and theoretical orientations
of the instructors.

The M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy focuses on treatments for a wide range of clinical areas including:

  •     Relationship Issues
  •     Marital Problems
  •     Family Problems
  •     Child-Parent Problems

Interns receive individual supervision, group supervision, and supervision based on direct observation, videotaped or audiotape sessions with clients. All clinical work is supervised by faculty members who are AAMFT Approved Supervisors.
