Policies
Expectations of Students
Students treat one another and their instructors with respect. They regularly practice, according to the recommendation of their instructor, and comply with stated PAM policies. Students offer their best efforts in learning situations, and freely share questions, comments, and concerns with their teacher when appropriate. Students are to be punctual and use diligence in bringing all needed materials. Students are expected to perform in recitals at the end of each semester.
Expectations of Instructors
In accordance with the PAM Mission and Policy Statements, teachers use diligence and professional skill in the completion of all tasks. Instructors undertake all work at the highest academic, quality form appropriate to and consistent with the instruction of students at PAM.
Expectations of Parents
Parents encourage and nurture their child’s music study in a variety of ways, consulting the instructor when suggestions are needed. They help the student develop a healthy relationship with the instructor and encourage punctuality and diligence in bringing all music/materials needed for the lesson. They are open to discussing concerns and pertinent insights into the child’s behavior (accomplishments, struggles, etc.) with the teacher at a time when the child is not present (over the phone). Parents of younger children are encouraged to attend lessons and are silent observers and note-takers. If possible, the parent remains out of view of the child and keeps still to avoid distractions. Follow-up conversations with the instructor are most welcomed at a time other than the scheduled lesson time.
Absences
Notify the instructor or the Prep Academy Office of an expected absence at least 48 hours in advance of the lesson. The instructor determines whether the absence is considered excused. Exceptions are made in the case of illness or extreme emergency. Lack of practice does not constitute an emergency. The occasional fifth week of a month may be used for a make-up lesson for excused absences, or as a week off if determined by advanced consultation with the instructor. There are generally 14 private lessons given in the Winter Semester and 16 in the Spring Semester. The Academy will charge the normal lesson fee for a no-show or unexcused absence. No refunds are given.
There are no make-up possibilities for group classes and no refunds will be given if the student has to miss a class.
In case the private instructor has an emergency, private lessons will be covered by a substitute either on the day of the lesson or at a later time.
If you need to cancel a lesson, please call the PAM office at 342-1597 or the private instructor directly. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE ULM DIVISION OF MUSIC!
Recitals
The Prep Academy is fortunate to have wonderful performance facilities- the Biedenharn Recital Hall (link to main ULM/music page). Recitals are held at the end of each academic semester. Students are encouraged to participate.
