Petting Zoo of Musical Instruments

During the play, Moby Pincher’s Musical Adventure, the musicians will demonstrate high and low pitched sounds of instruments used in a symphony orchestra. These sounds are very different from Louisiana’s Cajun music that Moby Pincher is accustomed to hearing. The instruments used in a symphony can be grouped into four families: Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion. Following the performance, classes will move to the lawn in front of Brown Auditorium for a new interactive activity called the Petting Zoo where they will find a display of the instruments used in the play. Each musical “family” will be represented. This activity is called the Petting Zoo because children will have a unique opportunity to see instruments up-close, hold them, and in some cases, actually play them. Marilynn Gibson, PAM Director, said the idea of the Petting Zoo is “The children can see these "animals in cages,” allowing them to actually "pet the creatures” as they stroll through our “`musical zoo.” Do you think you could be a drummer? Do your fingers fit on the keys on a clarinet? Can you balance a violin under your chin and hold a bow at the same time? What happens to your cheeks when you blow on a trumpet? Don’t miss this activity following the Moby Pincher performance. Registration for the play automatically includes reservations for your classes at the Petting Zoo. There is no charge for the Petting Zoo. Bring your cameras to capture your musicians!
A note on the photos: Some the photos show the “animals” playing their instruments during the performance. This year the performers will continue work with the children during the Petting Zoo activity. Special thanks for photography to Shelly Burroughs |
