Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana Presents Check to ULM's Occupational Therapy Department

Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana recently presented the Occupational Therapy department at the University of Louisiana at Monroe with a check in the amount of $1000. Debra McBroom Gaar, Field Representative of Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana, and Gladybelle Ensminger, Chairman of the Board of Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana, presented the donation to Kathy Davis, Department Head of Occupational Therapy, and Anne Lockhart, Director of Development at ULM.

The donation will be used to purchase items that are needed with students-in-training and with individuals with developmental disabilities.

"The Cerebral Palsy Association is interested in the education of those who are trained to work with individuals with CP and their families. Because of this, they make a donation to the occupational therapy department to support and further the instruction of student practitioners to work with this population," said Davis

"Donations in the past from Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana have been used to purchase up-to-date evaluative tools and treatment equipment such as positioning devices to be used with clients," said Davis.

"The donation was given in order to improve the life of Cerebral Palsy patients throughout the state of Louisiana," said McBroom Garr.

ULM houses two on-campus clinics. These clinics provide an opportunity for ULM OT students to apply the knowledge they acquire in their coursework and to allow the development of clinical skills and clinical reasoning. The clinics also provide community based services to individuals in the area who are non-served or under-served in terms of their developmental and healthcare needs. ULM can do clinical experiences in developmental disability conditions, and physical rehabilitation through an adult clinic and a child's clinic.

The ULM OT department is also involved with Cerebral Palsy of Louisiana through a yearly CP telethon. The telethon is available as a service project for ULM's occupational therapy students. This year the telethon will be held March 22-23 at the West Monroe Convention Center.

The OT department accepts client referrals from physicians. For more information contact the Occupational Therapy department at (318)-342-1310.

A digital photo of the check presentation is available upon request.
