Heath Studies seniors have lunch with business professionals

Thirty-five ULM Health Studies seniors took part in a professional business luncheon in the Student Center on Oct. 11.
As part of their HLST 4002 Healthcare Law class, instructor Dr. Paula Griswold coordinated a professional business luncheon where several community business leaders attended. The goal of this event was to improve the students' awareness of business dining customs to help them succeed in this area of workplace communication in the future.

ULM Fall Commencement Saturday at Coliseum

The University of Louisiana Monroe's Fall 2017 Commencement Ceremony is 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 9 in Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Degrees will be conferred by President Dr. Nick J. Bruno to students in ULM's three colleges and graduate school. Those students who finished their degrees during the summer sessions will also receive their diplomas. Approximately 749 degrees will be awarded; 584 bachelor's, 155 master's and 10 Ph.D.

ULM alumni and member of the ULM Foundation, Dr. LaVelle Hendricks, Associate Professor in the Psychology, Counseling, and Special Education Department at Texas A&M University - Commerce, Texas, will serve as the commencement speaker.

Health Studies students attend conference, leadership program in New Orleans

Three senior undergraduate Health Studies students, Mia Piazza, Lynh Ho and Savannah Pendergrass, attended the LeadingAge Annual conference in New Orleans, Oct. 29-31 with more than 5,000 attending.

These three students attended the conference by applying for and receiving full scholarships through the LeadingAge organization. The students not only learned about innovative solutions used with today's aging population, but also participated in the Student Leadership Program where they were able to network with many other students and experts in this field while participating in leadership meetings.

Veterans Day: ULM salutes former aviation professor and alum and helicopter pilot Lt. Col. Ernie Bruce

Lt. Col. Ernie Bruce served as a helicopter in Vietnam before coming to the University of Louisiana Monroe to lead the ROTC program. He earned his masters and went one to teach aviation. Today, in retirement, Bruce volunteers his time maintaining and repairing the Ouachita Council on Aging on Ferrand Street. He was named OCA 2017 Volunteer of the Year.

ULM Ski Team wins 28th National Championship

The University of Louisiana Monroe Water Ski Team traveled to Bennett's Water Ski and Wakeboard School in Zachary, La., to compete in the 38th national championship of the National Collegiate Water Ski Association.

The Warhawks tallied 12,165 points in winning their second consecutive and 28th overall national team title since the inception of the tournament in 1979.

The University of Louisiana Monroe Faculty and Staff senates will host a forum, "Higher Education: The Future of Louisiana," on Thursday, Nov. 2, which is Higher Education Day in Louisiana.

It's official: ULM Doppler weather radar scanning the skies

At a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, Oct. 25, University of Louisiana Monroe officials announced that the $3 million polarimetric Doppler weather radar is fully operational and actively scanning the skies of northeastern Louisiana and the surrounding area. The event was at the ULM Doppler radar site on U.S. 80.

In 2012, ULM was awarded a $3 million grant through the Louisiana Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOSHEP) to acquire a Doppler weather radar. In 2015, Enterprise Electronics Corporation was awarded the winning bid to manufacture and construct ULM's Doppler weather radar.

ULM Pharm.D. alumnus creates scholarship with $60,000 contribution

Monday, the same college held a check presentation to recognize an alumnus' $60,000 contribution toward a superior graduate scholarship that will support Doctor of Pharmacy students.

The contribution was made by Dr. Salvador "Sal" Scaccia who received his Pharm.D. from ULM in 2002, which was the first Doctor of Pharmacy graduating class at ULM.

Scaccia said the scholarship is very important to him as a way to give back to his alma mater for the gratitude and the successes he has made in his pharmacy career.

ULM Wind Ensemble presents concert Thursday

The ULM Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the semester at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, in Brown Auditorium. The performance is free and the public is invited.

The Wind Ensemble is the premier instrumental performing group of the University of Louisiana Monroe School of Visual and Performing Arts and is comprised of music majors and student musicians from other degree programs at ULM.

Conductors of the Wind Ensemble are Derle R. Long and Steven Pederson. Guest conductors for this performance are Kenna Veronee and Sean O'Pry.

On Saturday, Nov. 4, beginning at 7:30 a.m., the University of Louisiana Monroe will host its annual Browse on the Bayou, a specially designed campus visit day for high school juniors and seniors and transfer students.

ULM and partners help secure $20K grant for West Monroe public art

Thanks to a $20,000 Creative Placemaking grant through the Delta Regional Authority, West Monroe can launch a new public art project.

On Wednesday, the DRA, in partnership with leading national arts and government organizations, announced it will invest $309,000 in the arts and culture in the Delta. West Monroe received one of only 16 grants.

Wednesday it was brought to the attention of University of Louisiana Monroe administration that an offensive social media exchange on private accounts had been made public.

The comments were in violation of the ULM Code of Student Conduct and were reportedly made by members of a campus fraternity.

Board of Regents approves licensure for medical school at ULM

The Louisiana Board of Regents on Wednesday, June 21, approved the application for licensure submitted by New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) to operate a College of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
NYIT is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education with domestic campuses in New York (Manhattan and Old Westbury, Long Island) and Arkansas.
NYIT and ULM have a nonbinding Memorandum of Understanding through which the two entities are exploring establishing a Monroe site of New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) on the ULM campus.

The contestants' schedule is packed with rehearsals, appearances and events. The preliminary competitions start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and the finals at 8 p.m. Saturday, all at the Jack Howard Theatre at the Monroe Civic Center.

Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the University of Louisiana Monroe will host four events to raise public awareness and provide education on preventing sexual violence
The events are presented by the WellSpring and several campus groups, including ULM Counseling Center, Femhawks, Title IX Task Force and Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc.
Items for care packages for victims and survivors of sexual assault will be collected throughout the month. For lists of items needed, visit the Office of Recruitment, Sandel Hall 104 or Title IX Coordinator Office, Library 612.
The events are scheduled as following:

Monday: Sexual Assault Awareness Seminar at 5:30 p.m. in Nursing Auditorium.

Tuesday: Visit the Quad with the Title IX Task Force, the Wellspring, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Tuesday: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event starts at 4 p.m. in the Quad with registration beginning at 3:30 p.m.

April 26: Denim Day - Wear jeans to show solidarity with victims and survivors of sexual assault.

ULM's mock trial team headed to championship series

For the third straight year, a squad from the University of Louisiana Monroe's Mock Trial team finished as one of the top teams at the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) Regional Tournament on Feb. 19. The result qualifies the Maroon Squad for the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) in XX, XX in March. ULM is the only college or university from Louisiana to advance to the ORCS.

NLEP funds ULM Economic Impact Study of Ouachita and Black Rivers

North Louisiana Economic Partnership (NLEP) today presented the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) a $30,000 check to fund an economic impact study of the Ouachita and Black Rivers. The study will assess the economic impact of the Ouachita-Black River system from South Central Arkansas to North Central Louisiana. It will be submitted to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with the goal of maintaining the water levels and hours of operation of the rivers.

In Dec. 2016, the ULM Kitty DeGree School of Nursing received approval from the Louisiana State Board of Nursing to move forward with admissions to the Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) program. Program completers will be awarded the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree.
