Q.  Can a University Police Officer make a traffic stop or an arrest off campus?

 A.  Yes.  The Louisiana Revised Statute gives university police officers the right to discharge their duties on all streets, roads, and right-of- ways to the extent that they are contiguous or within the perimeter of the campus.  The statute also allows for execution of duties off campus when investigating a crime that occurred on campus, gathering intelligence, etc.

 

Q.  I have a temporary restraining order against my ex-boyfriend.  Do I need to notify the university police?

A.  Yes.  Any student, faculty, or staff member who has an active restraining order against an ex-boyfriend, husband, or another person should notify the university police department in order for us to effectively enforce the restraining order who may violate the terms of such an order.

 

Q.  I take night classes and feel uncomfortable walking by myself.  Do you offer escorts?

A.  Yes.  University police will provide an escort anywhere on the ULM campus. The escort will be either foot or mobile, which ever is available. Please call  5350 for an escort or for details.

 

Q.  When is the university police department open?

A.  Our administrative office hours are Monday - Friday  7:30 am - 4:30 pm and closed on holidays, however the police station is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

 

Q.  I recieved a parking citation and would like to appeal this.  Where can I go to do this and to find more information ragarding parking?

QIf I have car problems will a university police officer assist me?

A.  University police officers are not mechanics nor locksmiths, but in cases of a dead battery or if you have locked yourself out of your vehicle we will assist in these cases as long as the vehicle is on the campus.  

 

Q.  I would like to apply for a job at the university police department.  What positions do you have available and how would I go about applying?

A.  We offer numerous positions students looking for extra income such as writing parking citations, clerical assistants, and student dispatchers.  We also have a student officer program where students assist patrol officers with community policing.  We do also offer full time positions for dispatchers, patrol officers, and community police officers.  All positions can be applied for by coming by the police headquarters for further information or calling ext. 5350.

 

Q.  I was the witness of a crime or some suspicious activity.  What should I do?

A.  If you witness a crime or an incident you are unsure of contact the University Police immediately.  Do not disturb any evidence. This may hinder police in solving the case.  Please be able to give the name of the victim, a good description of the location, suspect information, license plate numbers and a good description of the suspect vehicle, and any injuries or medical attention required.

 

Q.  Is there a lost and found at your office?

A.  Yes.  However, not all lost/found items make their way to our office.  You may also check with department head offices in the academic buildings, but do check with us too.

 

Q.  How can I get information on crime statistics for our campus?

A.  Crime statistics can be viewed at www.ulm.edu/~police and follow the crime statistic links or you can stop by university police headquarters and pick up a copy of "Your Right to Know" brochure which also has crime statistics listed.

 

QHow can I help to protect my property?

A.  Some ways to protect property are simple.  Keep valuables out of sight if in your car.  Secure your doors and windows, and do not leave belongings unattended.  

 

Q.  I live in on-campus housing and want to bring my pet back to campus with me.  Is this allowed?

A.  Residential life does allow fish in small aquariums, but no other pets are allowed.  Exceptions are made for ADA designated sight dogs.  For further information on housing rules and regulations contact residential life at ext. 5240.
