Straight Talk from the President - October 2, 2008
Dear Colleagues,
Our faculty’s expertise is some of the best in the nation. In response to our nation’s current economic crisis, the College of Business Finance Program will share its expertise through an objective, informative economic forum for faculty and staff on Monday, Oct. 6, at 4:30 p.m. in Brown Auditorium. Presenters include Dr. Mike Parker, Professor of Finance and Chair of our finance program; Dr. Arturo Rodriguez, Instructor of Finance; Dr. Tammy Parker, Professor of Economics; and Mr. Louis Ray, a local financial planning expert.
These specialists will provide an overview of the economic crisis; they will address how we arrived here, what to expect in the future, and offer general advice for moving forward. It is our hope that the campus community will gain a better understanding of the challenges inherent to the current financial climate. The experts will not dispense specific financial advice, but will provide general advice, allowing you to make informed decisions as we weather the current economic storm.
I would like to advise you of another development at ULM. Under the direction of Dr. Richters and Lisa Miller, all of the career services functions are now housed within the Center for Career Connections and Experiential Education. The CCEE is designed to maximize career opportunities for students. It provides training and networking opportunities, along with resources such as a career resource database, that students can use to connect with potential employers and professional organizations.
These opportunities with industry professionals will allow students to gain real world experience through internships, job shadowing, and job placement. The CCEE will offer workshops to improve skills such as salary negotiation, interviewing techniques, and business and social etiquette. As you may know, Wednesday’s Career Fair was a major success; more than 300 students and employers participated. Please direct your students to Brenda Allen at the CCEE if they need career advice or assistance. She can be reached at 342-3386.
Finally, I encourage you to attend ULM Homecoming, Oct. 13 - Oct. 19. A special feature of that week is the dedication ceremony for our bronze Warhawk statue at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 16. The artist, renowned sculptor Sandy Scott, will visit ULM for the dedication before she continues on her way to celebrate another one of her pieces, which will be displayed at the Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark. For more information about Homecoming, please visit: www.ulm.edu/homecoming/
Have a great weekend.
Sincerely,
James E. Cofer
President
