Straight Talk from the President - June 10, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

Summer classes, packed PREP sessions and the installation of our new bronze Warhawk statue contribute to the continuous momentum of our university. The sculpture arrived little more than a week ago, and already its presence has made a difference on our campus. Soon, we will celebrate the statue and publicly recognize the donors, the artist and the key ULM participants who brought the project to fruition.

Bon AireThis summer commemorates what we can accomplish together with the outstanding support of our community. ULM will celebrate another such milestone on Friday, June 20. On that day, in celebration of the new University Residence, the ULM Foundation Board of Trustees will host two open houses: one for the ULM family, from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., and one for the general public, from 4 - 6 p.m. The name of the University Residence is Bon Aire, French for "good air," in this case referring to quality appearance, look, manner, or style.

Bon Aire, located at 4508 Bon Aire Dr., is the result of community support and vision. In 2005 ULM Foundation leaders began exploring ways to increase ULM's philanthropic support. They examined the increasing demand for university presidents to be involved in fund-raising and other external activities, and how crucial a president's home could be for these missions.

The Foundation adopted a fund-raising campaign for the proposed residence in 2006 and broke ground in 2007. While Bon Aire serves as the home for the ULM president and family, its role in the life of the university goes well beyond that of a residence. This Acadian-style residence will provide an elegant setting for receptions and dinners. University events will center on gatherings for faculty, students, and alumni, recognition of donors, and volunteer appreciation.

Studnet Success CenterOn Aug. 21 the university will support another collaborative effort — the Clarke M. Williams Student Success Center. The success center, largely funded with private dollars, will have a 24-hour lab, group study and tutor rooms, academic compliance office for athletics, advising, and academic support services for our students.

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying your summer. Thank you for your continued work.

Sincerely,

James E. Cofer
President
