Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences Announced

Dr. Mark Arant was recently appointed Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Louisiana at Monroe . His appointment begins July 8. Dr. Arant currently serves as a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry.

Dr. Arant received a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Louisiana Tech University . He earned a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in Organic chemistry, specializing in natural product synthesis.

He joined the faculty of ULM as an instructor in 1994, was promoted to assistant professor in 1995 and associate professor in 1997, and was selected as one of five Outstanding Professors at ULM in 2004. Dr. Arant’s current research interests include structural and reactivity studies of enolates and aromatic compounds, particularly stressed anthracenes.

As associate dean, Dr. Arant’s responsibilities will include overseeing the budget for Arts and Sciences, facilities, equipment, technology, graduate programs, grants and contracts and other tasks. “Mark brings a strong academic formation, an excellent work ethic, and recognized interpersonal skills to the decanal team,” said Dr. Carlos Fandal, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Arant has developed a modern organic chemistry program for ULM and acquired research grade instrumentation for the Department of Chemistry. He is a member of the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. Dr. Arant has received several teaching awards including being named twice in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Dr. Arant’s appointment is subject to approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
