Awards, Promotions, Retirement

Dr. Edwin Adams, pharmacy, was named Director of Student and Professional Affairs in the School of Pharmacy on March 15, 2004 . ● Dr. E. Adams was awarded the School Volunteer Award for Monroe City Schools on June 8, 2004 .

Dr. Karen Briski, pharmacy, was named Interim Head of the Department of Basic and Pharmaceutical Sciences on July 1, 2004 . ● Sushma R. Singh, a doctoral student in the laboratory of Dr. Karen Briski, received the “Best poster presented by a graduate student” award at the annual Neuroscience Research Day on May 7, 2004 , sponsored by LSUHSC-Shreveport, Department of Pharmacology. Twenty nine student posters, including 25 from the medical school and four from ULM School of Pharmacy's Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences, participated in this competition intended to showcase neuroscience research activities along the I-20 corridor. ● The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF) has awarded two significant research grants in April to Dr. Briski totaling $423,000. These grants will support Dr. Briski’s research into the brain’s role in the onset of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in insulin-dependent diabetics, as well as the use of pharmacological tools that aspire to aid the brain in preventing hypoglycemia. ● A poster entitled “Nonuniform neuronal genomic activation within the CNS metabolic regulatory circuitry is correlated with diminished counterregulatory response to recurrent insulin-induced hypoglycemia (RIIH)” presented by S. A. Paranjape, graduate student, and Dr. Briski at the 2004 American Diabetes Association Meeting in Orlando, Fla., was selected by the ADA Council on Complications as one of ten presentations for an evening poster discussion session.

Dr. Michael Crider, Head of the Department of Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences in the School of Pharmacy is retiring from the University as of August 1, 2004 .

The College of Arts and Sciences hosted a retirement reception on April 27, honoring John H. Filhiol, aviation, Linda D. Hart, English, Margrit D. Loomis, English, Dr. John H. Myers, physics, and Virginia S. Powell, mathematics.

KEDM, received a total of 17 awards at the 2003 annual Louisiana Associated Press Broadcasters Association (LAPBA) meeting held on June 12, 2004, at the Praline Connection Gospel and Blues Hall in New Orleans, La. KEDM competed in Class B, which encompasses all stations not in New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Shreveport. Sunny Meriwether, KEDM news director, received a total of 14 awards including Best Sports Story, Best Public Affairs, Best Newscast, Story of the Year and Reporter of the Year.

Here is the complete list of the awards: In the category Best General News, KEDM received first place for Big Zoo, Small Zoo by Kate Archer; second place for Fazzioli Grands by Sunny Meriwether; and third place for Odyssey of the Mind by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Best Feature, KEDM received first place for Nutrition Study by Kate Archer; second place for Flu Shots by Sunny Meriwether; and third place for Make-A-Map by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Continuing Coverage, KEDM received first place for West Nile by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Best Sports Story, KEDM received first place for True Grit by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Best Public Affairs, KEDM received first place for Monroe City Plan by Sunny Meriwether; second place for Interim Chef by Sunny Meriwether; and third place for Governor’s Debate by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Best Sound, KEDM received first place for Stepshow by Kate Archer; second place for Percussion Ensemble by Sunny Meriwether; and third place for LDCC by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Best Newscast, Sunny Meriwether received first place. In the category Story of the Year, KEDM received first place for Interim Chef by Sunny Meriwether. In the category Reporter of the Year, Sunny Meriwether received first place.

Dr. W. Greg Leader, pharmacy, was promoted from Assistant Dean of Student and Professional Affairs to Associate Dean and Director of the School of Pharmacy on March 15, 2004 . ● Dr. G. Leader was named to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Leadership Fellows Program, a program designed for continued development and promotion of leadership in pharmacy education in March.

Eun Jung Lee-Ok, women's basketball, received the Southland Conference Hall of Fame Award on June 2, 2004 , in Galveston , Tex. Her children, Peter, Kristina and Gabrielle, were present at the event.

Dr. Marshall Scott Legan, history and government, received the 2004 Special Humanities Award from the Louisiana Endowment for Humanities on April 27, 2004 , at a special ceremony at the Governor’s Mansion in Baton Rouge , La. , for his contribution to LEH reading programs for more than 20 years.

Dr. Harihara M. Mehendale, toxicology, has been elected as the Chair of the Division of Toxicology of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET). The Division has a membership of 600. He will serve as the chair from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005 and as the past chair during the following year.

Dr. Tammy Parker, economics and finance, recently received the spring 2004 College of Business Outstanding Intellectual Contributions Award .

Dr. Ava Pugh, curriculum and instruction, received an award for Professional Development School Service from the ULM PK 16+ Advisory Council during their spring meeting held on the ULM campus on May 6, 2004 .

Dr. Marty Steffenson, pharmacy, received the 2004 Health System Clinical Pharmacist of the Year award from LSHP at their annual meeting held in April in new Orleans, La.

Dr. Paul Sylvester, pharmacy, had his NIH/NCI grant renewed: “Antiproliferative and Apoptotic Mechanisms of Tocotrienols in Mammary Cancer” for a total of $202,500. ● Dr. Sylvester received a new Malaysian Palm Oil Board Research grant “Vitamin E and Breast Cancer” for $13,000, in May. ● Dr. Sylvester received a new grant “Signaling Pathways Involved in Mediating Vitamin E Induced Caspase Activation and Apoptosis in Breast Cancer Cells” for $5,000 in June and an AFPE “2004-2005 Gateway” Research Scholar Program for Professional Degree Pharmacy Students scholarship was awarded to his advisee Amanda Ranzino.

Shravanthi Gandra, pharmacy administration Ph.D. candidate, and her major advisor, Dr. Lesa Waggoner Lawrence received the Best Poster Research Award at the Annual Conference of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) held in May in Washington, D.C. There were over 500 poster submissions from around the world. Their poster was titled “Assessment of Patient-Reported Outcomes Among Osteoarthritic Patients” and contained an abstract, methodology, results, and conclusions of their research.

Dr. Jerrilene Washington, curriculum and instruction, received an award for Professional Development School Service from the ULM PK-16+ Advisory Council during their spring meeting held on the ULM campus on May 6, 2004 .

Coby Wells, university relations, was named Ambassador of the Month for the Monroe Chamber of Commerce for the last four months.
