Awards & Grants
Dr. Karen P. Briski, basic pharmaceutical science, received a grant for $98,933 from the National Science Foundation, Division of Integrative Biology and Neuroscience for her research project "SGER:  Quantitative Mapping of Se and Associated Proteins in the Brain: Effects of Dietary Deficiency" for July 2004 to June 2005.

Shriya Bhushan, Pharm.D. student, was awarded a Gateway Research Scholarship from the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education for 2004-2005 to carry out a research project under the mentorship of Dr. Ronald A. Hill, basic pharmaceutical sciences, titled, “Solution Behavior and Rat Brain Biotransformations of an a-Keto Acid Bioprecursor and Various Latentiated Forms: Studies Directed at Achieving the Efficient and Tissue-Selective Delivery of a Prototype Acidic Amino Acid Glutamatergic Agent to the Central Nervous System.”

Dr. Jay Bulot, gerontology, has been selected to be included in the 2004 edition of Marquis Who’s Who in America .

Dr. Melgardt De Villiers, M. Caira, Y. Robbertse, J. Bergh, and M. Song, basic pharmaceutical science, received the Best Publication in Pharmaceutics During 2003 Award, presented at the 25th Annual Congress of the Academy for Pharmaceutical Sciences, September 11-15, in Grahamstown, South Africa, for the article “Structural characterization, physicochemical properties, and thermal stability of three crystal forms of nifedipine” published in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Jay Hicks, radiologic technology, won second place in the Scientific Essay Competition held at the annual meeting of the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists in Baton Rouge on July 22, 2004 , for his essay titled “Implementing Collaborative Learning in the Radiologic Technology Curriculum.”

Dr. Carl Kogut, economics and finance, and Dr. Larry Short, management and marketing, recently won the Distinguished Research Award for their paper titled “The Federal Government As A Change Agent,” and presented their distinguished paper at the Allied Academics New Orleans International Conference.

The Radiologic Technology Program faculty and students made a strong presence at the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists 47th Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge in July. The Radiologic Technology Quiz Bowl team began the weekend by placing 2nd in a grueling statewide competition. Team members included Margaret Barham, Jason Courtney, Amber Gates, Landon Owens, Talmadge Roberts, and Leann Shows, with Andy Allen as the team coach.

JoEllen Showers, occupational therapy, was selected to be included in the 2004 edition of Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.
