Dance Now Part of the School of Visual and Performing Arts

The School of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to announce the inclusion of a Dance Minor at ULM in the fall semester of 2004. The Dance Minor for the Bachelor of Arts degree is intended to provide students majoring in other academic fields with a concentration in dance. The Dance Minor requires 21 semester hours of study in jazz dance, modern dance, ballet, theory of dance, organization and administration of dance, choreography and composition, history and philosophy of dance, dance repertory ensemble, and supportive courses including ballroom dance, folk dance, and kinesiology.

Accompanying the new Dance Minor Program in the fall semester will be the opening of two state-of-the-art dance studios and a student dance repertory ensemble. Students interested in auditioning for the dance repertory ensemble should contact Sara Sanders at 342-1312 or e-mail sanders@ulm.edu.

ULM is also pleased to announce that the School of Visual and Performing Arts and Twin City Ballet Company are co-sponsoring a ten day dance workshop July 19-30. This intensive workshop emphasizes Classical Ballet, Musical Comedy, Theatrical Dance, Jazz, Modern, Tap, and Dance Composition. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. at the ULM Brown Annex Dance Studios and at Linda Lavender’s School of Dance .

Students who qualify for college credit may enroll for 3 credit hours in DANCE 491-D (Summer Dance Workshop). As an incentive, ULM offers a Collegiate Program for High School students in grades 10-12 who have a 3.0 GPA. If admitted to this program, the total cost for 3 credit hours is only $150, plus the Summer Dance Workshop will also waive registration fees. The 3 credit hours can serve as fine arts credit or as an elective at the college level.

ULM will provide accommodations at Lemert Hall and meals at the Wigwam Food Court for workshop participants at a minimal fee.

Guest faculty for the workshop will include professional dance artists such as Joe Istre, Russell Sultzabach, John Magnus, Phyllis Sultzbach, Cherri Barnett, Katia Carranza, Michelle Harvey, Victoria Vittum, Dianne Maroney, Amelie Hunter, Elmarie Wessels, Leaia Caver, Dana Michaels, Linda Lou Bourland, and Gretchen Jones.

The workshop directors are Sara Sanders, assistant professor in the Division of Theatre and Dance at ULM (342-1312) and Linda Ford, Artistic Director of Twin City Ballet (361-0391). Either may be contacted about the workshop.
