PRESENTATIONS

Cynthia Bratton and Patti Porter, CASS, presented “Retention Strategies” at the Title III Director’s Meeting, February 2, in Arlington-Crystal City , Va. ● Ms. Bratton and Brandi Kelly presented “Academic Advising Training” at the ULM Teaching and Learning Resource Center Meetings, February 16, and March 1. ● C. Bratton and P. Porter presented “Relationships and Gender Issues” at the Northeast Louisiana Association of Counselors, February 20, in Monroe .

Ernest Bruce, aviation, addressed thirty-five advanced ROTC cadets and five faculty members on army helicopter use in Vietnam , February 24, at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro , Ga.

Dr. Wilson Campbell and Dr. Mark Doherty, kinesiology, presented “Parental Attitudes Regarding 2003 Youth Risk Behavior Survey Sexuality Items: The Northern Louisiana Perspective” at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, national convention, April 1, in New Orleans, La.

Paulette Cappel, social work, presented “Youth Violence in Schools: Prevention and Intervention Strategies” at the 2004 National Association of Social Workers Annual Conference, March 25, in Baton Rouge , La.

Dr. Rebecca Dodson-Webster, music, presented "Tai Chi for Horn Players" at the International Horn Society's Southeast Workshop at Florida State University , March 5-7. The session was part of the article series "Fit to Play," which has been accepted to The Horn Call, the International Horn Society's official journal. ● Dr. Dodson-Webster was featured in a regional artist recital at the workshop, performing selections from her recent solo CD, “Music for Horn and Piano.”

Dr. Janet Haedicke, English, was the session chair of “Perils of Crossing Over: Theatre Venues and the Commodification of Art” at the August 2003 Association of Theatre in Higher Education meeting, in New York City , NY .

Dr. Terry L. Jones, history & government, was the key-note speaker at the Kappa Alpha convivium in January. The topic of his address was "The Personal Side of Robert E. Lee."● Dr. Jones also presented "Twice Lost: The 8th Louisiana 's Battleflag at the Battle of Gettysburg" at the New Orleans Civil War Round Table in March.

Meredith Kennedy, art, presented "Roles of Women in Art Throughout History" at the ULM Chatauqua Nexus.

Dr. Sandra Lunte, Dr. Richard Seiler, music, and C. Trahan, presented eight concerts with the Louisiana Trio in December. ● Dr. Lunte and Dr. Seiler also performed a faculty recital at ULM in February and performed a guest recital at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches . The duo also performed at many Louisiana high schools. ● Dr. Lunte attended the Louisiana Flute Society Festival in Lake Charles , where she performed, recruited, adjudicated and ran a session.

Dr. Chris Michaelides, foreign languages, presented "Topical Realism in Prose Fiction by Creoles of Color: Literary Engagement and the Struggle for Equality in Nineteenth-Century Louisiana" at the National Association for Ethnic Studies Conference, April 1-3, in Philadelphia , Pa.

Dr. Stacy Moak, criminal justice, and Kelly Wright, graduate student, presented "Understanding Gun Violence in the Western District of Louisiana" at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences annual conference, March 9-13, in Las Vegas , Nev. This paper was produced from research that Dr. Moak is directing under a federal grant from the National Institute of Justice. The grant is a three year project that requires researchers to assess the gun crime problem in the Western District of Louisiana and to conduct an impact assessment of strategies designed in the district to reduce gun crime.

Mona Oliver, English, presented "Experiments in Teaching Academic Writing to International Students" at the Louisiana Association for College Composition on February 13.

Dr. Charlotte Owens, computer science, presented “The Effects of Distance Learning On The Attitudes of Elementary Age Children: Year 2, Follow-Up Study” at the SITE 2004 conference in Atlanta , Ga. , March 1-5.

Dr. Ava Pugh, curriculum and instruction, presented “Candidates’ Perceptions of Project Learning Tree and Star Lab” at the Louisiana Academy of Science Convention, March 19, in Lake Charles, La. ● Dr. Pugh and Dr. Jerrilene Washington, Curriculum and Instruction, presented “Fun with Social Studies Instruction” and “Distinguishing Between Wants and Needs” at the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies (LCSS) Summit, April 3, in Natchitoches, La.

Dr. Pamela H. Saulsberry, social work, was the commencement speaker at the Batesville, Miss., Job Corps graduation held on March 26. The title of the commencement speech was "Life's Lessons." ● Dr. Saulsberry participated in the Sixth Annual Empowering Girls for Success Conference, held in Monroe, La., on March 27. She conducted two workshops. The first workshop was entitled "Incest and Adolescent Pregnancy" and the second was on self-esteem and entitled, "I Love Me Some Me."

Dr. Joe Saunders, geosciences, presented “The Destruction of the Troyville Mound” at the 30th annual meeting of the Louisiana Archaeology Society in Alexandria , La.

Dr. Gary Stringer, curriculum and instruction, co-presented “Discovery and Significance of Gobiid Otoliths From the Middle Eocene (Early Lutetian) Cane River Formation of Louisiana,” with S.Q. Breard, Biostratigraphix Inc., and L. King, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, in Minneapolis, Minn.

Cliff Tresner and Robert Ward, art, presented their artwork at the Jarrell and Sanford gallery. ● Camille Jungman, C. Tresner and R. Ward presented their artwork at the Miro gallery. ● Jerry Lyles and R. Ward presented their artwork at the Edmund Williamson gallery. ● J. Lyles and C. Tresner, Art, presented "Painting and Jazz" as part of the ULM Fine Arts Festival Fridays.

Dr. Jerrilene Washington, curriculum and instruction, presented "Learning With Manipulatives," at Cypress Point Elementary School , February 5, in Monroe● Dr. Washington presented "I Know My Numbers" and "I Love Geometry" at the Louisiana Association of Teachers of Mathematics, November 14-15, in Lafayette , La.

Dr. Dale Welch, sociology, participated as a delegate to the Governor’s State Health Care Summit, March 3-4, in New Orleans , La.

Dr. Jo Anne Welch, curriculum and instruction, presented “The Case of Legal Drug Use in School: The ADHD Dilemma” at the Oxford Round Table at Oxford University , in England , March 21-26.

Dr. Holly Wilson, history and government, presented “Kant and Environmental Philosophy: Just How Green is Kant?” at the Interpreting Kant Conference, Loyola University , September 2003, in New Orleans , La. ● Dr. Wilson also presented “Kant and Environmental Philosophy: Just How Green is Kant?” to the North American Kant Society session at the American Philosophical Association meeting in March in Pasadena, Calif. ● Dr. Wilson presented “Justice and Care in Medical Ethics” at the Regional Med-Tech Certification Training Session, October 2003.

The Radiologic Technology Department hosted the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technology (LSRT) Mid-Winter meeting in Monroe March 19-20. More than 125 radiologic technologists and 250 student radiologic technologists attended the event. Jerry McNeil, radiologic technology, served as program chair for the meeting which provided 12 hours of approved continuing education. Other Radiologic Technology faculty members and students served as session moderators and in various capacities throughout the meeting. The title of the program for the meeting was Diversity: Bringing It All Together. The following ULM faculty and staff members made presentations at this event:
