Dr. Mary Adams, English, presented “Permanent Cosmetics, Consumerism, and the Role of Ritual” at the Joint Conference of the Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association in April 2004 in San Antonio , Tex.

Dr. Howard Baker, CIS, delivered the keynote address and presented “Knowledge Engineering for Supporting Professional Conduct Decisions: An Exploratory Design” at the Enterprise 2004 Hawaiian International Faculty Student Conference in Honolulu , Hawaii , in May 2004. He also chaired the IT mini conference at this convention.

Dr. Jay Bulot, Dr. Chris Johnson, gerontology, and Dr. Jo Ann O’Quinn, presented “Sustaining Intergenerational Service-Learning in Higher Education” in March 2004, to the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. ● Dr. J. Bulot will present “Health Locus of Control: Effects on the Information Seeking Behavior of Older Adults” at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America in San Diego, Calif. ● Dr. J. Bulot presented “Public Policy Issues in Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders” on October 8, 2004, at the Louisiana Alzheimer’s Disease Conference, in Monroe. ● Dr. J. Bulot, Dr. C. Johnson and Dr. O’Quinn will present “Sustaining Intergenerational Service-Learning in Higher Education” in November at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America, in Washington, D.C. ● Dr. J. Bulot, Dr. C. Johnson and Dr. Sandra Blake, pharmacy, presented “Pharmacy Students’ Attitudes Toward the Elderly Before and After a Semester-Long Clinical Experience” in March 2004, at the Joint Conference of the American Society on Aging and the National Councils on Aging in Philadelphia, Pa.

Dr. Sean Chenoweth and Dr. Paul Washington, geosciences, will present “Extracting Usable Lineation Orientations From Digital Elevation Data Through Normalized Discretized Slope Diagrams” at the 116th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, on November 7-10, 2004 , in Denver , Colo.

Linda Christmas and Carrie Hicks, social work, presented “Support for Foster Parents at Last:  The Louisiana Adoption Support Team (L.A.S.T.)” at the Louisiana Foster/ Adoptive Parent Association Annual Conference, September 12-15, 2004 , in Baton Rouge , La.

Dr. Dorothy Davis, and Dr. Thomas Hodge, accounting, presented two papers titled, “Broadband Deployment In Rural America: Are State And Federal Tax Credits The Answer?” and “Refund Anticipation Loans In Today’s Tax Market” at the national conference of the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences in Las Vegas, Nev.

Dr. Melgardt De Villiers, J. Roldan, T. Majeti, S. Kunder, H. Ai, M. McShane, Y. Lvov, and D. Mills, basic pharmaceutical sciences, presented “Nanosignals: Engineering the Temporomandibular Joint Disc. Advancing Diagnostic Approaches for TMJ Diseases and Disorders” at the Third Scientific Meeting of The TMJ Association, co-sponsored by the Office of Rare Diseases, National Institute of Bioimaging and Bioengineering, Office of Research on Women's Health, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research on May 5-7, 2004, in Bethesda, Md. ● Dr. De Villiers, M. Song, and N. Li presented “Effect of Processing Factors on the Properties of Sustained Release Amoxicillin Ethyl Cellulose Microcapsules Prepared by Emulsion Solvent-Evaporation” at the 31st Annual Meeting and Exposition of the Controlled Release Society, on June 12-16 in Honolulu , Hawaii . ● Dr. De Villiers will give six presentations at the 18th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, on November 7-10, in Baltimore , Md. He will present “Solubilization of Niclosamide by Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) Dendrimers: Effect of Dendrimer Generation Size and Surface Functional Group” with B. Devarakonda ; “The effect of ball-milling in the presence of PVP and surfactants on the dissolution rate of nifedipine,” “Controlled release of nifedipine from microspheres prepared by wet spherical agglomeration versus spherical crystallization,” and “Preparation and characterization of highly porous carrier particles with improved loading during interactive mixing” with N. Li, and M.Song; “Validation and comparison of dynamic microcalorimetry with XRD and IR for the characterization of pharmaceutically relevant materials” with M. Song, W. Liebenberg, A. Redelinghuys, and N. Li; and “Thermal analysis of 4-sulphonic calix[n]arenes and their interactions with poorly water-soluble drugs” with W. Yang.

Dr. Rebecca Dodson-Webster, music, was the featured soloist in the Grove City College Alumni Concert held in Grove City , Pa. , in July 2004.

Dr. Ann Findley, biology, presented "The Role of the Posterior Vacuole in Microsporidian Spore Hatching" at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Microsporidia as Emergent Pathogens in the 21st Century, July 9-16, 2004 , in Ceske Budejovice , Czech Republic .

Dr. Carl Gilbert, biology, X. Liu, H. Wang, I. Rhodes, A. O’Leary, and M. F. Slavik presented “Comparison of Antibiotic Resistance and Genotyping Results Obtained from Campylobacter jejuni Isolated from Chickens and Turkeys at Retail” at the Annual Meeting of the International Association of Food Protection in August 2004, in Phoenix, Ariz. ● Dr. C. Gilbert, M. F. Slavik, X. Liu, A. O’Leary, H. Wang, and I. Rhodes, presented “Comparison of Subtyping of Campylobacter jejuni from Retail Poultry Products by Pulsed-Field Gel Electrophoresis and Flagellin Gene Typing” at the proceedings of the 85th Annual CRWAD, in Chicago, Ill.

Elizabeth Guerriero, economics and finance, presented “Tax Issues for Professional Athletes” at the 11th Annual Conference of the American Society of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

Robert Hanser, criminal justice, presented “An Examination of Chinese University Student's Perceptions of the Criminal Justice System in the United States ” at the National Conference for the Asian Association of Police Studies in August 2004.

Dr. Bonnie Hatchett, gerontology, presented “Caregiving in the African American Community” on October 8, 2004 , at A Caregivers Conference/Alzheimer’s Disease, in Monroe . ● Dr. B. Hatchett will present “HIV/AIDS in The Elderly Population” on December 11, 2004, at the 6th Annual Geriatric Medicine and Gerontological Update in New Orleans, La. ● Dr. B. Hatchett and Dr. Chris Johnson, gerontology, will present “Alzheimer’s in the African American and Mexican American Community” at the 2005 American Society on Aging Conference.

Tibb Jacobs and Rebecca Reed, Pharm.D. presented “Comparing Medication Adherence Rates in a Southeastern Hypertension Clinic” co-authored with D King, S. Barud, M. Wofford, and S. Noble on August 18, 2004, at the Second Annual National CDC Prevention Conference on Heart Disease and Stroke in Atlanta, Ga. The presentation will be published in Preventive Medicine.

Dr. Marsha McGee Johnson, gerontology and sociology, will present “Women and Spirituality - Peace Pilgrim, a Wise Woman Who Serves as an Example for Healthy Aging and Spirituality” in October 2004, at the Mid-South Sociological Society annual meeting in Biloxi, Miss.

Dr. Scott Legan, history and government, presented a series of six programs on the History of Louisiana at the Franklin Parish Public Library on September 21, 2004 . This RELIC program was sponsored through a grant funded by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. In the coming year, Dr. Legan will present several programs on Civil War Louisiana at the Ouachita Parish Public Library through a series titled "Monday Milestones" scheduled for the third Monday night of each month. The program is organized by Vivian McCain.

Dr. Michelle McEacharn, accounting, presented “Game Play in the Learning Environment: Who Wants To Be An Accountant? Lawyer? Economist?” and “The Risk of Assessing Control Risk Too High: A Demonstration of Underestimation” at the Council Meeting and Education Issues Committee Meeting at the National Meeting of the American Accounting Association Conference, in Orlando, Fla. ● Dr. M. McEacharn presented the co-authored paper “MUS without the MESS: An Excel Spreadsheet for Monetary Unit Sampling”and represented the Department of Accounting as President of the Southwest Regional American Accounting Association Conference in Austin, Tex.

Pat Melton and Paulette Cappel, social work, will present “Youth Violence Prevention in Schools: Prevention and Intervention Strategies” on November 1, 2004 , at the 16th Annual National Dropout Prevention Conference in Orlando , Fla.

Dr. Ruth Miller, CIS, presented “Analyzing the University Web Site: Frequent Tasks Performed by Students” co-authored with Dr. Donna Luse and Dr. John Rettenmayer, CIS, at the Association for Business Communication—Southwestern and Southeastern United States Convention in Orlando, Fla.  

Dr. Paul Nelson, and Dr. Robert C. Eisenstadt, economics and finance, presented “Sales Taxes, Retail Sales and Employment” at the Allied Academies New Orleans International Conference.

Dr. Shirlee Owens, gerontology and sociology, presented “Women and Leadership: The Chilean Women’s Resistance to Military Rule – 1973 to 1989” at the Oxford Round Table held August 8-13, 2004, in Oxford, England.

Harish S. Parihar, basic pharmaceutical sciences, presented “New Synthetic Route to d-Tubocurarine Fragment Molecules,” co-authored with K. Kirshbaum and R. Hill, at the 227thAmerican Chemical Society National Meeting, on March 31, 2004, in Anaheim, Calif. ● H. Parihar presented “General Synthetic Route for Preparation of d-Tubocurarine Fragment Molecules: Probing the 5-HT3R and nAChR” co-authored with Dr. Mark Arant, K. Kirshbaum and R. Hill, at the 31st MALTO Medicinal Chemistry Meeting, on May 17, 2004, in Memphis, Tenn.

Dr. Keith Parker, Dr. David Manry, construction, and Vanessa Doherty, university relations, presented “Damage Prevention Tools for the Future” at the 2004 Joint States Meeting of Utility Coordinating Councils from Alaska , Montana , Idaho , Washington , and Oregon , on September 22 in Portland , Oreg.

Dr. Ava Pugh and Dr. Sherlyn Powell, curriculum and instruction, will present at the Louisiana Council for the Social Studies in Lafayette , La. , in November, and at the National Science Teachers Association Convention in Richmond , Va. , in December. ● Dr. A. Pugh will present a research paper to the Mid-South Education Research Convention in Gatlinburg , Tenn. , in November. ● Dr. A. Pugh is running for President-Elect of MSERA.

Dr. George Roberts, clinical laboratory science, and Brett Bennett, radiologic technology, presented “The Laboratory & Radiology Findings in Multiple Myeloma” at the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists 47th Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge in July.

Patricia Roshto and Aleecia Hibbets, accounting, presented “The Effect Of Students’ Timely Completion Of Web-Based Supplementary Materials And Undergraduate GPA On Performance In The Introductory Accounting Course” at the Southwest Regional American Accounting Association Conference in Austin , Tex.

Dr. Jeff Rush and Dr. Stacy Moak, criminal justice, K. Wright, J. Ambrose, and K. Jones traveled to Raleigh , N.C. to the Southern Criminal Justice Association Annual meeting to present “Using Crime Mapping to Analyze Gun Crime in the Western District of Louisiana,” and “Examining the link between gangs and terrorism.” Dr. S. Moak and Dr. Lisa Wallace of Eastern Kentucky University presented "Hellfier and Brimstone in School: Examining the role of religion in restraining school delinquency."

Deborah Shell, radiologic technology, presented “Food for Thought” and “Ilizarow Method” at the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists 47th Annual Meeting in Baton Rouge , La. , in July.

JoEllen Showers, Melanie Christian, and Carolyn Murphy, occupational therapy, presented “An experiential Through a Child’s Senses” on June 10, 2004 , as part of the ULM criminal justice program’s Juvenile Officer Certification.

Dr. LaRue Love Sloan, English, presented “ ‘I’ll watch him tame and talk him out of patience’: The Curtain Lecture in Shakespeare’s Othello” at the Popular Culture Association in San Antonio, Tex., in April 2004.

Dr. Gary L. Stringer, curriculum and instruction, and colleagues from an international team presented their work on fossil fish and sharks from the Gatun Formation in Panama at the IX National ( Mexico ) Paleontologic Congress in October in Chiapas , Mexico . ● Dr. Stringer and former ULM Geoscience graduate students Lauri Elizabeth Anderson and Lorin King (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology) have had their study titled "Taxonomic, Paleoecological, and Evolutionary Significance of Fish Otoliths from the Oligocene (Rupelian) of Louisiana" accepted for a presentation at the international meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in November in Denver, Colo.

The Theater and Dance division of the School of Visual and Performing Arts presented “Vital Signs III” featuring dance instructors Laura Iacuessa and Gretchen Jones on September 10-11 at the ULM Spyker Theater. ● The Theater and Dance division of the School of VAPA will perform at the President’s Gala – Visual and Performing Arts Fundraiser premiering ULM ’s Repertory Dance Ensemble with Choreography by Laura Iacuessa on October 12 at the ULM Recital Hall.

Dr. Paul Washington, geosciences, presented “Correlation of the Subsurface Structure in the Monroe Gas Field, NE Louisiana, With Overlying Neotectonic Features” and “Structure of the Eastern Portion of the Monroe Gas Field, NE Louisiana” at the Annual Meeting of the Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies, on October 11-12 in San Antonio, Tex. ● Dr. Paul Washington and Alan Morgan, geosciences, will present “ Evidence For Compressional Late Holocene Tectonics in Northern Louisiana ” and “Fracture-Controlled Recharge Into The Confined Sparta Aquifer, Northern Louisiana ” at the 116th annual meeting of the Geological Society of America on November 7-10, 2004 , in Denver , Colo.

Dr. Jo Anne Welch, curriculum and instruction, Dr. Christopher Thompson, music, and Dr. Laura Thompson, Louisiana Tech vocal pedagogy, will present “Interdisciplinary Curriculum and The Fine Arts: Baroque Style” on November 6 at the 51st Annual Convention of the National Association for Gifted Children in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Emily Williamson, child development center, will present “Come and Collect:  Exploring Collections Utilizing Science Process Skills, Science and Math Tools, Journaling, and Classroom Discussion” on October 23, 2004 , at the Louisiana Early Childhood Association 38th Annual State Conference.

Dr. James Wood, CIS, attended the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges at the 2004 South Central Conference in Austin, Tex., and presented “User Satisfaction with CBA Computer Labs” co-authored by Bo Markovic, ULM MBA graduate.

Dr. Sheri Wright, clinical and administrative sciences, presented “Developing and Implementing a Tool to Document and Evaluate the Impact of Clinical Pharmacists in an Ambulatory Care Setting” co-authored with B. Thomas, K. Malcolm, B. Amin, and G. Schmidt, in December 2003, at the 38th ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting, in New Orleans, La. ● Dr.  Wright presented “Perinatal Transmission of HIV: Current Prevention Strategies ” at the Pharmacy Grand Rounds at the Shands Jacksonville Medical Center , in February 2003, in Jacksonville , Fla.

Dr. Michelle Zagar, clinical and administrative science, presented “What You Need To Know About Medicare Prescription Drug Benefits” at the Louisiana Aging Network Association Annual Conference on August 25, 2004 , in Baton Rouge , La.
