Professional Leadership and Development
Dr. Christine Berry, economics and finance, attended the Risk and Insurance Management Society Conference in San Diego , Calif. , in April 2004.

Dr. Ronald Berry, CIS, Dr. Donna Luse, CIS, and Dr. Michelle McEacharn, accounting, attended the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business International 2004 Learning from the Leaders Conference in September 2004, in Denver , Co.

Abigail Bratton, Julie Davis, Randall Dulaney , Barbara Michaelides, Patti Pate , Mary Elizabeth Sewell, and Kim Todd, Student Success Center , attended the Noel-Levitz Conference in July, 2004. The conference focused on enrollment objectives such as student recruitment, financial aid, student retention, market research, publications, web site development, and professional development. They also attended the pre-conference workshop on the retention management system, the College Student Inventory (CSI), which ULM is currently using with all FRYS classes. ● A. Bratton, J. Davis, R. Dulaney, Ida Gaines, B. Michaelides, P. Pate, M. E. Sewell, and K. Todd attended an intensive two-day workshop on Supplemental Instruction provided by Maureen Hurley, Associate Director of the Center for Academic Development at the University of Missouri , Kansas City . The training focused on procedures for selecting SI courses and SI leaders; evaluation and funding of the program; ongoing training and supervision of SI leaders; theoretical frameworks underlying the SI model; and effective learning strategies and SI session activities.

Debra Brossett, nursing, was awarded the Glenwood Regional Medical Center Endowed Professorship.

Dr. June Bruyninckx, family and consumer science, attended the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) National Convention on October 1-2, 2004 , in Natchez , Miss.

Dr. Jay Bulot, Dr. Chris Johnson and Dr. Bonnie Hatchett, gerontology, were recently awarded a contract to research “Aging with Down Syndrome” by the Resource Center on Aging with Developmental Disabilities.

Juliet Burgess, nursing, has been appointed as the Department Head of Nursing Concepts

Michael Cappel, social work, was recently named Louisiana State Coordinator for the “Run for The Wall,” the largest movement of motorcycles as a single unit across the US . The group converges in Washington , D.C. , and travels to the Viet Nam Memorial Wall as “Rolling Thunder.” The purpose of this ride is to keep alive the memory of the POW/MIA who are still awaiting their return home from Viet Nam and all our nation’s wars. The ride motto is “We ride for those who can’t.”

Paulette Cappel, social work, will attend the 16th Annual National Dropout Prevention Network Conference October 31-November 3 in Orlando , Fl.

Linda W. Christmas, social work, was appointed to the La. Department of Social Services, Office of Community Services Workgroup for Continuation of Statewide Family Resource Centers. OCS has funded all three ULM Social Work Department Family Resource Centers since 1996.

The CIS Department recently offered a Business Technology Summer Camp where high school students and teachers learned about careers in the information systems field and skills such as programming, database development, web-page development, and networking.

Dr. Roy Clinton, management and marketing, attended the Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE) National Convention in Reno , Nev. , in April 2004.

Dr. Kenneth Clow, management and marketing, attended the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) Maintenance of Accreditation Seminar in May 2004 in Tampa , Fla.

Dr. Lisa C. Colvin, kinesiology, will serve as co-investigator with Pennington Biomedical Research Center researchers on the Louisiana Health (LA Health) grant. This USDA-funded childhood obesity prevention program is a school-based intervention that uses different treatment strategies to prevent overweightness in rural Louisiana school children grades 3-6. The study will be conducted for 3 years and the development of a valid and usable national intervention model is one of the project’s goals.

Emily Doughty, nursing, has been appointed as the Department Head of Nursing Interventions.

Catherine Estis, Talent Search, is in her third year pursuing a Ph D. in the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Jackson State University with a Policy Analysis Concentration and was named a 2004 Eisenhower Fellow.

Dr. Valerie Fields, student life and leadership, received her Ed.D. degree in Curriculum and Instruction, Cognate-Technology from Louisiana Tech University and will be hooded on November 20, 2004 . Dr. Fields successfully defended her dissertation “The Effects of the Teacher’s Levels of Technology Integration on Student Achievement in Reading and Mathematics” under the Louisiana Education Consortium (LEC), a collaborative effort of Louisiana Tech, Grambling and ULM.

Steve Gaharan, social work, project director for the Child Welfare Family Resource Center in Delhi, known as Family Ties, completed two years of service on the Louisiana Department of Social Services, Office of Community Services, Region VIII, on the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee; and is currently serving on OCS subcommittee on consumer rights.● S. Gaharan, participated in a fundraiser for the center sponsored by The Big Top Travel Centers in Waverly, La. A community barbeque was held and its proceeds will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for needy children served by the ULM Center.

Dr. Janet Haedicke, English, is a referee for the South Atlantic Modern Language Association Quarterly.

Robert Hanser, criminal justice, was selected as a participant in the International Academic Scholars program and taught a two-week workshop on Chinese Americans and the Social Service and Criminal Justice Systems of the United States May 21 - June 6 at Beijing Union University , College of Arts and Sciences, in Beijing , China . ● R. Hanser has been gradually working on his state certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor in addition to his current credentials as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas . ● R. Hanser attended the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselor Training (LASACT) Conference in July, 2004, and received specifics on opiate and narcotic drug addiction, codes of ethics and dual relationships, and suicide grief/loss issues. ● R. Hanser has provided psycho-educational services on anger management and substance abuse issues to inmates at David Wade Correctional Facility.

Please Join Helen Hogan, nursing, for her retirement tea on November 4 at 2:00 p.m. in the nursing conference room. Helen has served as interim director of the School of Nursing .

Dr. Chris Johnson, gerontology, took twelve students and two professors this past summer to Scotland 's Stirling University to study “New Approaches to Dementia Care” and “The Person-Centered Approach to Dementia Care”. This conference was held at the Dementia Services Development Center of the University of Stirling , in Scotland , July15-28, 2004. Under the auspices of Professor Mary Marshall of Stirling University , the classes revolved around lectures, visits to community service organizations and feedback/review sessions conducted by leading practitioners in the field of dementia. The program involved an international dimensionality with contributors and Professors from Europe joining United States faculty--Dr. Chris Johnson and Ms. Roxann Johnson as lecturers for the weeklong seminar. Dr Bonnie Hatchett and Dr. Marsha McGee, Institute of Gerontology , attended the lectures.

Sandra Jones, nursing, was awarded the Sister Anne Marie Twohig Endowed Professorship.

Dr. Troy Kammerdiener, Dr. Jose Cordova, Dr. Lon Smith and Kim Taylor, computer science, coordinated the Association for Computing Machinery's local programming contest on September 17, 2004 , in which eleven computer science majors competed for positions on two programming teams and various prizes. Solving two problems in 304 minutes, Devin Canterberry earned a position on the programming team and a 256 Mb USB key. Corey Bordelon and Thom Savage won 2nd and 3rd place, both also solving 2 problems. Paul Gullette, Matt Michels, Patrick Lewis, and Paul Boquet each solved one problem. The top six contestants will form two programming teams that will travel to LSU early November to compete in the regional ACM programming contest.

Dr. Marsha McGee, gerontology and sociology, will soon attend a conference on Death & Dying in Jackson, Miss.

Dr. Stacy Moak, criminal justice, joined the Board of Directors for Twin City Ballet Company.

Annette Murdock-Tangye, human resources, was promoted to Assistant Director of Human Resources on August 1, 2004 .

Dr. Michael Parker, economics and finance, attended the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) National Conference on May 23-25, 2004 in Kansas City , Miss. Dr. M. Parker and Dr. Tammy Parker, economics and finance, recently attended the Federation of Business Disciplines (FBD) Conference in Orlando , Fla.

Dr. Ava Pugh, curriculum and instruction, the ULM representative for Southwest Education Development Laboratory (SEDL), attended the annual fall conference in Austin , Tex. , on September 26-28, 2004 . Representatives from seven states gathered to share the success of the Access Centers of their school systems and universities.● Dr. Pugh was initiated into the Monroe Garden Club on September 13, 2004 .

Linda Reid, nursing, was awarded the Sister Jerome Crowley Endowed Professorship.

Patricia Roshto, and Dr. Dorothy Davis, accounting, recently attended the Southwest Regional Beta Alpha Psi Leadership Conference in San Antonio , Tex.

The Department of Criminal Justice is proud to announce the addition of Dr. Jeff Rush to its faculty. Dr. Rush comes from the University of Tennessee , Chattanooga . He has a B.S. and a M.S.M.A. from the University of Alabama , Birmingham , and a D.P.A. from the University of Alabama . Dr. Rush has a total of 16 years of teaching experience. He is active in many criminal justice organizations and concentrates his research in the area of gangs and terrorism.

Dr. Jenny Savage, Tamara Thompson, Andrea Savage, Lula Williams, Latanya Whiteside, Lillie Tucker, Krystal Graham, and Liz Dawkins, social work, along with ULM SW Title IV-E students, Christy Ticheli and Melody Karamanis, attended the Faith-Based Adoptions Mini-Conference sponsored by Grambling State University School of Social Work and the U.S. Administration on Children, Youth, and Families, Region 6, in Shreveport, La., to encourage child welfare professionals to increase collaboration with churches to achieve permanent homes for abused and neglected children.

The ULM Social Work Department Family Resource Centers sponsored a local grandparent in the 6th annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference in Baton Rouge , on September 17, 2004 . Brenda McKeel represented our region and became the first representative from Monroe to ever participate in the conference. Mrs. McKeel knows first-hand some of the issues and challenges in raising her grandchildren, which she has been doing since her daughter’s death one year ago. Mrs. McKeel enjoyed participating in the conference, and attended a session on the Kinship Care Program conducted by the Louisiana Department of Social Services, Office of Family Support (OFS) and a session on how the Association of Retired Persons is helping grandparents raise grandchildren.

The ULM Social Work Centers will be involved with the Ouachita Council on Aging (COA) to bring more workshops and support to the region. More grandparents are caring for children of working parents and are sought out for placement when parents are unable to care for children, according to ULM Social Work Department graduate and COA Social Worker, Fannie Holland. She adds that it is essential that everyone works together to help elders care for their grandchildren.

The ULM Social Work Department Title IV-E Child Welfare Program conducted its 2004 Families in Focus Fall Seminar at the Holiday Inn Holidome in Monroe . The guest speakers were nationally recognized Dan and Gail Tate of the Louisiana Family Council in New Orleans . The seminar was titled “Getting Fathers Involved in the Process” and presented child welfare professionals advanced practice methods to help families increase recognition and involvement of fathers in childcare. Dr. Richard Hood and Amy Weems welcomed the group on behalf of ULM ; the training was moderated by Dr. Jenny Savage and coordinated by Andrea Savage.  There were 145 attendees representing State agencies for child protection, juvenile justice, and education, and included professionals from private and nonprofit groups, such as social workers in private practice, the VA Medical Center in Shreveport , Grambling State University School of Social Work Title IV-E, Promise Specialty, Christus Schumpert, St. Francis Medical Center, Glenwood Medical Center , and Jackson Parish Hospital.

Dr. Jerry Wall and The Center for Business & Economic Research are winding down their 14th year of data collection for the federal Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Data for this system is collected from every state in the nation and allows the activities and attitudes of Louisiana residents to be compared to the rest of the nation. CBER's involvement included assistance in instrument design; supervising programming of new questionnaire into a computer-aided telephone survey instrument, collection of data, editing and reformatting of data and submitting it to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Over the course of the year CBER will have collected telephone interviews from over 9,000 carefully selected Louisiana residents and asked them about various behaviors that affect health. Smoking, smokeless tobacco use, alcohol consumption, eating habits, care for the elderly, inoculations and exercise are among the many topics included in the survey. In addition, CBER collected data from over 3,000 New Orleans residents as part of the STEPS to a Healthier U.S. program. The grant was obtained from the Louisiana Public Health Institute/New Orleans Health Department. These data will be used to provide insight into decisions as to allocation of scarce public health dollars.

Emily Williamson, Child Development Center , was awarded the National Administrator Credential, the only national credential designed specifically for child care administrators, by the National Child Care Association, after completion of specialized training in nine administrative competency areas.

Dr. Holly Wilson, history and government, and Dr. Ann Findley, biology, attended the Ethics Institute - Faculty Summer Program workshop “Teaching the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications of the Human Genome Project,” at Dartmouth College , on July 25-31, 2004 .

Linda Wilson, human resources, was promoted to Human Resource Analyst 1 on June 14, 2004 .
