Professional Leadership and Development

Veronika Avery, university relations, attended the CASE Annual Conference for Media Relations Professionals March 22-23, in Washington , D.C.

Abigail Bratton, CASS, received certification as a Nationally Certified Counselor.

Dr. Jose Cordova, computer science, mathematics and physics, accompanied the ULM Computer Programming Team to participate in the Consortium for Computing Science in Colleges (CCSC) 2004 Mid South programming contest, on April 2, 2004, in Little Rock, Ark.

Vanessa Doherty, university relations, attended the CASE Editor’s Forum March 29-31, in Cambridge , Mass.

Dr. Carlos Fandal and Frances Gregory, arts and sciences, attended the Tri-State Meeting of Deans of Arts and Sciences, February 26-28, in Tuscaloosa , Ala.

Dr. Janet Haedicke, English, is a reviewer for the South Atlantic Quarterly and Palgrave Press. Dr. Haedicke serves on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council, the Southern Repertory Theatre-New Orleans and the Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society.

Dr. Patrick J. Hebert, communication, was recently appointed to the National Communication Association's Faculty Advisory Board for Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honor Society.

Brandi Kelly, CASS, attended the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) in October 2003 ● Cynthia Bratton, B. Kelly, Kim Todd, Abigail Bratton and Patti Porter, CASS, attended the Annual Conference for First Year Experience (FYE) February 21-24, in Addison , Tex.

Meredith Kennedy, art, participated in the Masur Museum of Art Annual National Juried Competition in Monroe , La. ● Ms. Kennedy was appointed to the Exhibition Committee of the Northeast Louisiana Arts Council.

Dr. Mervin Kontrovitz, geosciences, has organized a research group with scientists from the British Museum , University College of London, and the University of Greenwich to study the Ostracoda of the Thames Estuary. The focus will be on environmental change since Roman and Medieval times.

Betty Ann Nolan, CASS, attended the Excellence in Customer Service training, January 2003; the Microsoft Word Training, October 2003; The United Way meeting as the CASS representative, October 2003; the training session to review the Civil Service Employee Handbook, June 2003; and the Basic Purchasing 101 training, January 2004, at ULM.

Dr. Eric Pani was named Associate Provost on March 29. Dr. Pani has been a faculty member at ULM since 1987 and previously has served as Head of the Department of Geosciences, Interim Dean of the College of Pure and Applied Sciences, and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  He also has been Assistant to the Provost since March 2003. Two national searches have been conducted to fill this position, and Provost Richters is confident that they have selected the best applicant.

Dr. Keith Parker, construction, was elected president of the Association of the Louisiana Utility Councils for a two-year term. ● Dr. Parker attended the Association of General Contractors annual conference in Orlando , Fla. , March 9-13.

Patti Porter, CASS, will participate in the SACS on-site review, and serve as the lead evaluator for the commission on Colleges on-site review committee at Birmingham Southern College, in Birmingham , Ala.

Dr. Ava Pugh, curriculum & instruction, has been asked to represent ULM at the Southwest Education Development Laboratory (SEDL) Organization. She will attend meetings 2-3 times a year for workshops in mathematics and science methods.

Dr. Beth Ricks, curriculum & instruction, earned her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Literacy from Arizona State University in December.

Dr. Joe Saunders, geosciences, was appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of American Archaeology.

Elizabeth Turner Smith, computer science, math and physics, has been selected to participate in next year's MERLOT program. MERLOT conducts structured peer reviews of online learning materials. The primary purpose of these reviews is to allow faculty from any institution of higher education to decide if the online teaching-learning materials they are examining will work in their course(s). The emphasis on the user's perspective is the reason peer reviews are performed by peer users of instructional technology, and not necessarily peer authors of instructional technology. MERLOT is a free and open resource designed primarily for faculty and students of higher education. Links to online learning materials are collected here along with annotations such as peer reviews and assignments.

Dr. Ruth E. Smith and Ms. María Blanca Wortham, foreign language, attended the Louisiana Foreign Language Teachers Association meeting, March 5-6 in Lafayette , La.  Dr. Smith is the outgoing president of the association, and Ms. Wortham was elected to a second term on the Executive Board of the organization.

Robert Ward, art, participated in the Peyton Regional Arts Festival Competition in Alexandria , La.

Dr. Holly L. Wilson, history & government, organized the 2004 Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council Conference March 5-6, in Monroe , La.   Honors Programs in Universities across the state were invited and 8 universities participated.

The Department of Communicative Disorders sponsored and hosted their 17th annual Research Update Conference on March 12. This year's topic was Auditory Processing Disorders. The guest speaker was audiologist Dr. Jeanane Ferre from Oak Park , Ill. Poster presentations in the areas of speech, language, and hearing disorders by graduate students in CODI and graduate students from Southeastern followed the conference.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department, the Junior League of Monroe Project Child Committee and the Louisiana Early Childhood Association District 2 sponsored a professional fair on the campus February 28. Two hundred fifteen early childhood professionals from ten north Louisiana parishes attended. Professionals from child care, Early Head Start, Head Start, public, private, church affiliated schools and university students were among those attending. The purpose of the fair was to inform professionals in the early childhood field about opportunities for beginning or continuing education in the early childhood field in northeast Louisiana . Informational displays were presented and training sessions conducted hourly. Presenters included Diane Aillet, Louisiana Pathways; Dr. Rena Jackson, family and consumer science; Laura Chestnut, LA Tech Early Childhood Education Center; Peggy Buffington and Lynn Tynes, Twin Cities Early Head Start; Marci Livingston, Northeast Louisiana Even Start; and Shari Jones, Volunteers of America. The event was organized by Emily Williamson, ULM Child Development Center .

The Social Work Program hosted the Social Work and Criminal Justice Career Fair on March 17, where local social service and law enforcement agencies provided an opportunity for social work and criminal justice majors to explore job opportunities.
