ULM Contributes to the Success of Race for The Cure

The Northeast Louisiana Race for the Cure, sponsored by the local affiliate of the Susan G. Komen foundation, was held in Monroe on September 11. Race for the Cure is a national series of 5K runs and fitness walks designed and implemented by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Every year, races held in 86 cities attract more than 500,000 runners and walkers to raise money for breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment.

This year, a record number 3,374 people participated in the Monroe race which included the Kids for the Cure Walk.

Dr. Carlos Fandal, Dean of the ULM College of Arts and Sciences, has chaired the Race for the Cure organizing committee for two years. “The race is an important event for the whole community,” he said. “It raises the awareness of the need to be vigilant about breast cancer. It's also a chance for the community to see cancer survivors running the race and living a healthy life after having the disease.”

Other ULM members of the organizing committee who made the success of this event possible included Dr. Wilson Campbell, head of Kinesiology, who served as this year’s co-chair; Dr. Mark Doherty, Kinesiology, website coordinator; Dr. Gary Stringer, curriculum and instruction, race co-director ; and Vanessa Doherty, university relations, registration chair. The Association of Students in Kinesiology was the main volunteer group and helped the committee before and after the race to set up tents, signs, and clean up the site.

This year, several groups from ULM participated in the race including teams representing the ULM spirit groups, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Health Sciences , and the College of Business Administration . “ ULM ’s ongoing commitment to the welfare of our community has been well demonstrated by its outstanding support of the Race for the Cure over the years,” Dr. Fandal said. “This year’s participation reached a new high and there is every indication that even this record will be surpassed next year.”

Every year, proceeds from the Komen Race for the Cure Series help fund important breast cancer research as well as breast health initiatives on a local level. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds are donated to Monroe area organizations working to eradicate breast cancer through research, education, screening and treatment. The remaining twenty-five percent of proceeds are forwarded to help fund the Komen Foundation's National Grant Program, and a grants review process has been developed to award the local grants.

The Northeast Louisiana Race For The Cure is now preparing to offer secure, online registration for the 2005 race through Active.com. Race participants will thus be able to use a major credit card to register online.  Paper registrations will also be accepted for the 2005 race and a form will be available online for those who want to mail their registration. The Northeast Louisiana Race For The Cure is currently looking for its 2005 chair and for committee volunteers. For more information on the 2005 race check out www.rftc.us
