Explanation of changes made based on the results and analysis of the 2007-2008 cycle of assessment:

All course titles for 2008-2009 have been renamed from CODI to SPLP in accordance with the departmental name change from Communicative Disorders to Speech-Language Pathology. 1.1 A terminology exam was administered to undergraduate students who had progressed from PCOD to CODI status. The targeted goal was met and and the exam will be readministered this year to the appropriate, incoming group of students. 1.2 A phonetic transcription test was administered, the goal was met and the test will be readministered this year to the appropriate, incoming group of students. 2.1 A disorders and differences competency exam was administered in CODI 470 last spring; the goal was met and the exam will be readministered this year (spring, 2009) to the appropriate, incoming group of students. 2.2 A competency exam related to identification and characteristics of neurological disorders effecting communication, swallowing, and oral motor function was was administered to students. The goal was met and the exam will be readministered this year (spring, 2009) to the appropriate, incoming group of students. 3.1 The Case Study project and rubric is still being designed by the Speech-Language Pathology faculty. 3.2 This goal was met last year, is completed every fall semester by the students in SPLP 445 and is ongoing. 4.1 All students in CODI 300 during Spring 2007 obtained 25 clinical observation hours as required by ASHA. 4.2 This objective was achieved in Spring 2007 as reported by the students. A rubric is being designed by Speech-Language Pathology faculty to formalize the process.

Student Learning Outcome:

The student will demonstrate knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural bases.

Measures:

After completing 15 credit hours of undergraduate coursework in basic human communication processes in the undergraduate communicative disorders program, the student will demonstrate competency in the terminology used to describe normal communication processes.

Criteria:

1. Upon application for progression, 100% of the students will score 80% or better on a departmentally-constructed Terminology Competency Exam.
2. Upon completion of SPLP 417/418, 100% of the students will score 90% or better on a phonetic transcription test.

Student Learning Outcome:

The student will demonstrate knowledge of the nature of speech, language, hearing, and communication disorders and differences and swallowing disorders, including their etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates.

Measures:

After completing 12 credit hours of undergraduate coursework in disorders and differences of communication, the student will demonstrate knowledge of disordered aspects of communication, including language, articulation/phonology, hearing, and neurology.

Criteria:

1. During the final semester of the undergraduate program, 100% of the students will score 80% or better on a departmentally constructed Disorders and Differences Competency Exam.
2. Upon completion of CODI 490, 100% of the students will score 80% or better on an exam related to identification and characteristics of neurological disorders effecting communication, swallowing, and oral motor function.

Student Learning Outcome:

The student must possess knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with communication and swallowing disorders, including consideration of anatomical/physiological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates of the disorders

Measures:

After completing 24 credit hours of undergraduate coursework the student will demonstrate knowledge of methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for persons with communication and swallowing disorders, and their relationship to anatomical, developmental, linguistic and cultural correlates of the disorders.

Criteria:

1. 100% of the students will score 80% or better on a departmentally constructed project applying the knowledge and skills acquired.
2. 100% of the students in SPLP 445 will complete a powerpoint presentation based on research of communication disorders and differences in an ethnic and/or social culture other than their own.

Results and Analysis:

Student Learning Outcome:

The student will successfully complete the undergraduate program making them eligible for admission into a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology.

Measures:

After completing the required courses in the undergraduate curriculum (minimum of 51 credit hours) the students will have the necessary background to successfully gain admittance to a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology.

Criteria:

1. 100% of the students will obtain 25 clinical observation hours in SPLP 300.
2. After completing the undergraduate program in communicative disorders, 80% of those who apply to a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology will be accepted.
