Special Activities for ULM Sociology StudentsThe University of Louisiana at Monroe also offers students numerous other opportunities to get involved. Sponsered events:
Candlelight
Vigil Sociology Club: An active ULM Sociology Club offers students opportunities beyond classroom study. Members engage in activities that include service projects, social events, field trips, and guest speakers. The Sociology Club also conducts fund raising projects. Some of these funds have enabled the Club to send students to several conventions of the Mid-South Sociological Association (MSSA) and the Southwestern Social Science Association (SSSA). These conventions provide opportunities to attend paper presentation sessions on many topics and to meet sociology faculty and students from throughout the South. Sociology Club members have also presented their own papers in competitive and non-competitive student paper sessions at these conventions. Other Club funds have been used to honor deserving sociology majors at the annual Spring Semester Departmental Awards Dinner. Since many sociology departments at other colleges and universities also have clubs, students are urged to network with sociology students throughout the world. In addition, the American Sociological Association has membership benefits for university sociology students. The ULM Sociology Club is open to all ULM students. Students interested in more information or joining the ULM Sociology Club should contact Professor David Burley at Email Alpha Kappa Delta: Students who demonstrate high achievement in sociology are invited to become members of Alpha Kappa Delta, the national sociology honor society , The ULM Zeta Chapter of AKD seeks to recognize exceptional scholarship and promote the field of sociology. Back Internships: The ULM Sociology Program is moving toward a more applied or practical orientation. As part of that process, ULM sociology students with acceptable academic qualifications are encouraged to complete an internship during their senior year. Arrangements are made with local businesses, government, and social agencies so that students may apply their sociological knowledge to real-life situations. This internship should prove valuable in helping students to develop future employment skills and to learn specific job requirements. A designated sociology faculty member works closely with the students and their work supervisors to see that all parties are satisfied with the duties assigned.
