Warhawks Mentoring Program

Sami OwensThe University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) Warhawks Mentoring Program, a Learn and Serve Mentoring Program, and as part of a ULS Serves Grant, will provide college and career readiness activities which will increase the likelihood that “at-risk” rising freshmen will remain enrolled in high school and graduate.

The intent of the program is to create a mentoring environment in which fifty carefully trained ULM students will be matched one-on-one with fifty ninth-grade high school students from Carroll High School and Wossman High School.

The program will form mentoring partnerships and alliances with ULM’s Division of Student Affairs and the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, specifically the Department of Biology and the Department of Social Work.

Planned Activities:

  • Academic and career guidance will be provided at the student’s high school.

  • Student and mentor will attend specially designed University functions such as high school/college career fairs

  • Spring Awards Banquet to celebrate achievement of both mentees and their near peer mentors.

Parental Empowerment Program:

In an effort to ensure family support, the program will work with the parents through our Parental Empowerment Series to provide relevant information and social building skills which will facilitate their ability to more effectively support their child’s success.
