About File Size and Attachments

E-mailing attachments increases file size. This in turn increases server processing, increases download time, and decreases hard drive space on the mail server.

Example:

In addition to increased processing on the server drive, a message sent to 1,079 employee e-mail adresses would create 34,528k or 34.5 megabytes of lost hard drive space. This same message sent to 9,382 student e-mail addresses would create 300,224k or about 300 megabytes of lost hard drive space.

Combined, it would take almost 335 megabytes to store this message on the mail server. Although this is only temporary, many messages are not downloaded or deleted promptly off the server.

Users who check their messages through slow connections or off-campus will also be inconvenienced by the longer download time. This is especially inconvenient if the message, once downloaded, does not pertain to them.
