Our mission is:
- to assist writers, regardless of their
status (faculty or students), their level of proficiency, or
their college, during the various stages of their writing
projects;
- to create a supportive environment in
which writers and their readers can work effectively
one-to-one
- to train writing peer tutors to become
knowledgeable, effective readers of and responders to texts
from various disciplines.

In addition, The Write Place continuously
attempts to overcome the stereotype that this is a place where
only remedial students come for help. We serve all levels of
writers, from beginners to experts. We view writing here as an
ongoing process and we help students at every point of that
process, from understanding readings and interpreting
assignments to brainstorming, organizing, drafting, and editing.
Overall, we want to help students understand their own writing
processes and not just "fix" a particular problem. We believe
that students can accomplish and learn much more if they attend
regularly, to work on ongoing concerns rather than just coming
for one or two visits to work on short-term problems.

Equipment:
The Center is equipped with 50
state-of-the-art windows-based computers, one scanner, and two
laser printers. Each computer is loaded with a variety of
software such as MS Word, Internet Explorer, and access to
MyCompLab.
Some of the Services We Offer:
One-on-one tutorials.
Sessions are 30 - 60 minutes minutes, and begin at the ½ and full
hour. We offer assistance in writing for any subject, from
anthropology to zoology.
Small-group tutorials.
Occasionally students working on the same or similar writing
assignments work collaboratively in small-groups, reviewing and
responding to one another's writing. The writing tutor facilitates
these peer review sessions, providing direction, questions and
feedback.
Walk-in tutorials.
We offer a limited number of walk-in appointments. If we have a
cancellation or a free spot, a walk-in student can fill that time
slot.
Workshops. The
Write Place offers a series of workshops, covering a range of
topics relative to writing and software applications.
Computers and software.
The Write Place has 50 computers; most are connected to the
Internet. Several software programs provide assistance in
generating & organizing ideas, improving grammar/mechanics,
writing resumes, grammar drill and practice and more. Please
see our
links
page for a continuously growing list of sites related to
writing.
Handouts. We
provide a wide variety of useful handouts, covering topics such as
documenting sources, writing a thesis statement, developing
paragraphs, and proofreading.
Resource books. We
share our resource materials with interested students and faculty;
our library includes texts about teaching writing, critical
analysis, essay writing and much more.
What are we doing and what else can we do?
After a tutorial (or several tutorials), students are asked to
fill-out a Student Evaluation of The Write Place and/or a
Tutor Evaluation form. Please feel free to offer suggestions on
how we may better serve you.
