The White River
System originates in northwest Arkansas, flows into southwest Missouri and
back into north-central Arkansas before joining the Arkansas River in
southeastern Arkansas.
Originally a warm-water stream, a series of hydroelectric dams built by
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers between the late 1940's through the 1960's
turned the White into a cold-water stream, effectively killing off the
smallmouth bass and other warm-water game fish. Trout were successfully
introduced in an effort to bring the White River back to its stature as
a
premier fishing stream. Today the White River is considered one of
the best trout streams in the United States, if not the world.
