Hurricane Safety Tips

A Hurricane Watch is for areas where a hurricane is possible, not imminent. People within the watch area should take preliminary precautions and be prepared to take immediate action if a hurricane warning is issued.

A Hurricane Warning is issued when hurricane conditions are expected within 24-hours. Begin precautionary actions at once!

When a Hurricane Warning has been issued:

Ø      Make sure your gas tank is topped off. It is recommended that you do this as soon as a hurricane watch is issued.

Ø      Listen to weather updates and stay informed.

Ø      Keep a portable radio and flashlight on hand - with fresh batteries.

Ø      Clear your yard of all loose objects.

Ø      Move your boat to safe harbor and moor securely. Do not stay with the boat.

Ø      Store drinking water in clean containers.

Ø      Shutter or board all windows and secure double-door entrances.

Ø      Plan your evacuation route, know where to go, and fill your car's gas tank.

Ø      IF ORDERED TO EVACUATE - OBEY IMMEDIATELY! Take your HURRICANE EVACUATION KIT. Turn off water, gas, and electricity. Tell your friends and neighbors where you are going.

Ø      DO NOT ENTER EVACUATED AREAS UNTIL THE LOCAL OFFICIALS HAVE ISSUED AN ALL CLEAR.

Ø      Evacuate manufactured (mobile) homes for more substantial shelter.
