CARES Act Relief Aid

Note: The Deadline to Apply for CARES Act Aid was June 7, 2020.

How ULM is Providing CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students

As part of the agreement ULM signed with the U.S. Department of Education, ULM pledged to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

A total of $2,888,882 has been designated for distribution to students in the form of Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

ULM estimates that 4,230 of its students are eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.

As of June 4, 2020, ULM has awarded $1,405,500 (or 48.7% of the total) in CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grants to 4,120 students.

ULM is using two methods to distribute aid to students:

1. ULM provided $300 to every student eligible to receive federal student aid to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations that couldn’t be easily documented. Beginning May 14th, $300 checks were disbursed to 4,120 students, totaling $1,236,000.

2. Students who were eligible to receive the standard $300 award could apply for additional CARES Act support through an application process. To be considered for additional CARES Act aid, the student had to provide supporting evidence to show they had COVID-related expenses/costs greater than what was covered by the $300 award. Covered expenses included food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care costs. A committee reviewed the applications to determine if additional aid was warranted. Based on the committee's recommendations, students received awards up to $750 in addition to their initial $300 aid, meaning the maximum amount that a student was able to receive is $1,050 ($750 + $300). A total of 1,297 students submitted applications for additional aid. After reviewing the first 661 applications, ULM disbursed $169,500 to 473 students on June 2nd. When review of the remaining 679 applications is completed by mid-June, ULM expects to disburse an additional $175,000.

The funds remaining after aid is disbursed to the last group of students will be made available to eligible students returning in the fall who had COVID-related expenses.
